Our different types of places to stay in Sussex

Where to stay in Sussex

You could take in the whole of Sussex in a whirlwind tour, or pick one lovely spot and idle a few days away. Here are some of our favourites stops on your itinerary or bases for your break.

In the city itself you’ll find independent shops in the cobbled streets of The Lanes as well as fantastic nightlife and an indescribable fun feel, while relaxed, arty Hove is its own little world just along the pier.

Rye

A historic town that wears its seaside location lightly, more cafes and galleries than buckets and spades, but a wetland nature reserve and the spectacular Camber Sands are a short stroll away.

England’s newest National Park is a lush green landscape that rolls down to the white cliffs of the Seven Sisters. Stroll village to village along the 100 miles of the South Downs Way from Winchester to Eastbourne.

Pronounced Lewis, not Loos, the older part of town is home to lovely bakeries and breweries and the whole place is taken over by the colourful, inclusive Artwave festival in August and September.

About our special places to stay in Sussex

What is the prettiest town in Sussex?

While beauty is in the eye of the beholder, many consider Rye the prettiest town in Sussex. Its cobbled lanes, medieval buildings, and fairytale charm make it feel like stepping into another era. Perched on a hill with views over the Romney Marshes, Rye is full of independent shops, cosy pubs, and art galleries. Whether you’re wandering down Mermaid Street or exploring nearby Camber Sands, Rye blends historic atmosphere with a vibrant creative spirit.

Which is nicer, East or West Sussex?

Both East and West Sussex have their own charm, so it depends on what you’re looking for. East Sussex offers dramatic coastlines like the Seven Sisters, vibrant towns like Brighton, and literary gems like Lewes. West Sussex leans more rural, with rolling Downs, beautiful villages like Arundel and Petworth, and sandy beaches at West Wittering. Each offers a different pace, but both are packed with character, natural beauty, and cultural depth. Basically, you can’t go wrong with either.

Are there any sandy beaches in Sussex?

Yes, while much of Sussex’s coastline is shingle, there are some lovely sandy spots too. Camber Sands in East Sussex is the most famous, with vast golden dunes and plenty of space for beach games and windsurfing. West Wittering in West Sussex is another favourite, offering clean, soft sand and clear shallows perfect for swimming. These beaches are ideal for family days out, dog walks, or just lounging with a picnic and a sea breeze.
