The Experience

Come for a restful stay at this award-winning barn. In the lofty space where once the oxen were fed and watered, you can settle on a comfy sofa, be warmed by large cast-iron radiators, admire the view over the church and the famous Long Man of Wilmington. Two bedrooms with timber framed walls and antique chandeliers are off the hall and have lovely vistas over the lily pond or fields; a shared bathroom has a deep copper bath and Bramley soaps and lotions.

Cook in the well-equipped kitchen with a copper worktop, plenty of prep space, pretty Portmeirion china and an antique welcome hamper full of delicious treats to tide you over. On balmy days you can sit out at a small table near the lily pond and listen to birdsong or wander down the lane to The Sussex Ox for a restorative pint.

Walks from the door are plentiful: there’s a farm gate right opposite you with green fields leading up to the Downs. Pop into Alfriston for a medieval high street and independent shops.

Reviews

I loved this beautifully renovated building - and would love to stay here to enjoy the Byre itself and its stunning surroundings. There is plenty to do in the area and the Byre would be the perfect place for a very relaxed holiday.

The neighbourhood

There are endless places to shop and eat. A five-minute drive will take you to another pub, The Cricketers Arms and Alfriston has many pubs, tea rooms and restaurants. Charleston, home of painters Vanessa Bell and Duncan Grant, is superb and also has a pretty garden. Bateman's (NT) has a wonderful garden. There's a super farm shop, Middle Farm, 4.4 miles away for stocking up with local produce.

Local points of interest from The Owner

  • Walking distance from The Byre rests The Long Man of Wilmington. A large chalk figure carved into the downs with interesting folklore surrounding its origins.

  • Just over a mile away is the medieval village of Alfriston which lies in the valley of the River Cuckmere. Visit Alfriston church known as the ‘cathedral of the south’ and don’t miss The Clergy House – the very first property bought by The National Trust.
  • Alfriston village is crammed with little independent shops including art, antiques, vintage clothes, gifts, a bookshop and a useful local store. With three tearooms & two country pubs you are also spoilt for choice when it comes to good food & drink!
