The Experience

Wave goodbye to the tourists trundling west and drop past banks of wildflowers to an unstirred hamlet where kingfishers, egrets and buzzards thrive alongside friendly locals – pick up cider and fresh eggs from the farm next door.

The setting may be poetic but there’s everything for a boisterous family holiday here; dinghies and kayaks can be launched from your orchard garden and an old stone bridge is perfect for competitive Pooh sticks.

Inside, warm up around a cream Aga or the wood-burner in convivial, whitewashed rooms with space to come together or spread out. Dry land explorers will find a network of walks and bike rides from the doorstep – refuel with decent coffee and a croissant at Lerryn’s village shop, or a pint in the Ship Inn while ducks waddle past.

Reviews

Vera, Cheltenham

We were keen to find a holiday home suitable for 10 of us (6adults, 4 children under 7) and Penpoll proved to be the perfect place for us. The children loved paddling in the creek and launching dinghies. The adults enjoyed bbq’s on the terrace and joining in games of cricket on the riverbank. The house is very well equipped with everything you need for a comfortable stay. There are many beaches and attractions close by and during our stay we spent time as a family in booth Looe and Fowey. Overall we loved our stay at Penpoll - so much so that we’ve already booked a return trip for 2026.

Rosie, Northampton

We had a lovely stay at Penpoll in June, family with older teens. Wonderful location, plenty of well maintained garden and terrace areas, the waterside access useful when we hired kayaks from Fowey. Well equipped house, with home from home kitchen and comfortable living room. Dog was in heaven here and we couldn't keep her out of the creek so the tiled utility, kitchen and dining area proved useful. Made use of the ev charging which made daily drives out easy. Plenty of parking for the kids extra cars. Hope to come back soon!

Penelope, Uley

Our recent stay at Penpoll was, once again, utterly delightful. The house is beautifully designed and fabulously equipped throughout and surrounded by beautiful gardens on different levels with river views . It is a wonderful place to relax and unwind. I can't rate it highly enough. This was our second visit and we plan to make it an annual event!

Megan, London

We had such a wonderful week at Penpoll with our two tinies. From the crisp bed linen and fluffy towels, to the beautiful gardens and incredibly fast Star Link internet - Sarah-Jane has thought about everything. We spent hours with the kids playing in the creek and felt thoroughly relaxed sipping a G&T on the terrace after their bedtime. Penpoll is in a wonderful location, perfect for nipping into Fowey and heading down to Lantic Bay. The combination of thoughtful touches, beautiful setting, and endless splashing in the creek for the children, made this the perfect family holiday!

Maybeth, Pacific Grove CA

We just returned from a perfect week at Penpoll. It was absolutely magical. The peaceful setting, the comfortable furnishings, the artwork and books, the multiple outdoor areas, the apple orchard and the views! Bucolic. It has to be one of the most restorative spots we’ve ever stayed. We did not want to leave. Sarah-Jane was a delight to communicate with. A truly special area of Cornwall, full of history, associations with literature and a haven of peace. Thank you.

Location

The neighbourhood

Water, water, everywhere is the main attraction, Penpoll Creek meandering from the cottage to the River Fowey then out to the coast. Canny swans and ducks know the right moment to appear at the gate for feeding time and massed banks of primroses, orchids, and riverside ferns and mosses are all around. You can take the ferry over to Fowey from Bodinnick, 3 miles away, for great galleries, restaurants and beaches, but the real point of Penpoll is losing yourself in nature.

Local points of interest from Sarah-Jane Muir

  • A wide choice of fabulous beaches. See for yourself why this coastline inspired so many of Daphne du Maurier's novels.
  • Slipway and boatyard for boat launching/ mooring less than 2m away or launch your small dinghy and kayaks from Penpoll's orchard. Friendly RYA sailing courses run regularly in Fowey.
  • Wonderful restaurant, pubs and clothes/interiors shopping, Galleries galore in Fowey via Boddinick Ferry, 3m.
  • Enjoy magnificent cornish gardens, especially in the Spring. The Eden Project is under 20 mins away. Other Gardens, such as Heligan, Lanhydrock, Caerhays Castle, Pencarrow, Tregrehan, Trebah, Tregothnan, and many more, are all within easy reach by car.
  • Miles of magical rural footpaths right from the doorstep of Penpoll. Soak up the peace, close to the creek's abundant birdlife as you walk along it's banks, or walk the stunning Southwest Coast from Polperro to Polkerris - an epic day!
  • A genuine escape with stunning river views and teaming with birdlife, beautiful Egrets and Kingfishers perch in the orchards, Resident Ducks and swans show off and wait to be fed, right outside the gate!

Introducing

Sarah-Jane Muir

Sarah-Jane and her family have relished escaping here from the congested South East for over twenty years. The children have grown up on these holidays, developing enduring loves for water sports and the outdoor life. Sarah-Jane finds Penpoll reviving more than anything, and loves hearing that other families are captivated by her magic corner of Cornwall too.
