The Experience
Cornwall at its most quintessential: tucked into a cove on the bank of the river Helford, just a kayak’s paddle away from Gillan and Frenchman’s Creek. The Boathouse is the nearest thing to a boat without actually being on the sea – but with the waves lapping at the deck you won’t have far to go to dip a toe in Cornish waters.
Bring your own craft and use the private slipway, or walk to neighbouring village St Antony at low tide and hire – they’ll deliver direct to the beach. You’ll mostly be outside, messing about with fishing nets, rockpooling and leaping in and out of boats (the drying room for wetsuits comes in handy).
The house is perfect for big family gatherings: a pot big enough for lobsters, a huge games room, two dishwashers for efficient clean up after dinner. But smaller groups will feel right at home taking just one floor. Outside it’s real Swallows and Amazons stuff, but inside there’s a log burner and superfast WiFi.

We had a great stay in The Boathouse in Gillan last week. The location is amazing - the very spacious, light, and airy house sits in its own cove, and we spent quite a lot of our time just relaxing in the house, looking out onto the sea and the small flotilla of boats either moored just off the coast on or their journeys. We also enjoyed how quiet the location was - which helped us ‘switch off’ and really relax. The owner, Suzy Goulding, was very efficient in arranging our booking, and providing lots of useful information on local places to eat and some of the many interesting places to visit.

The Boathouse was a wonderful location for our family celebration. It is exceptionally well equipped for large groups, with plenty of space indoors, including a large kitchen/dining room, sitting room, snooker room and wet room for swimmers to clean down. Outside, there is ample space for parking and a nice patio area for the BBQ and table tennis. But best of all was the raised decking area, set just a couple of metres from the beach on the beautiful Gillan Estuary. The Boathouse has the perfect view of this sheltered inlet. We all loved our stay in the Boathouse.

Location
The neighbourhood
Coastal walks start from the beach and run along the banks on either side of the house. Famously accommodating local café Fat Apples is down the footpath in Saint Keverne, which has a butcher, baker and a handful of sweet little shops and pubs set around a pretty square. The villages of Helford and Manaccan have more restaurants, including much-lauded South Café.
Local points of interest from Suzy Goulding
- Boat hire (sailing, motor, kayak) and moorings from St Anthony. Hired boats can be delivered to the beach or you can walk over at low tide.
- 2 Tennis courts available for hire in Manaccan (5 mins by car).
- The house is on the coastal path so there are fabulous walks from the doorstep.
- Tate Modern. National Maritime Musuem, Seal Sanctuary, Flambards are all within an hours drive as are a number of stunning gardens including Trebah.
- 2 High Chairs and 2 Cots provided upon request.
- Owner provides a list of tried and tested recommendations of pubs, restaurants, places to visit and things to do in the immediate area when you book.

Introducing
Suzy Goulding
Suzy Goulding and her two sons have tried and tested every inch of The Boathouse over the last 20 years, expanding and updating along the way to keep up with their ever-growing family. Suzy’s a keen sailor of dinghies and yachts and can recommend the best places nearby for a pootle, as well as all the best pubs, restaurants and ice cream shops – but otherwise you’re left to your own devices.
Before we arrived, Suzy was friendly and helpful, emailing lots of useful info about the house and local area. The house was large and very comfortable, with two living areas, a large dining room, and spacious bedrooms. It was well stocked, several bathrooms and sizeable kitchen. The remote, peaceful setting and beautiful views made it easy to relax and unwind. We loved stepping straight from the house onto the beach and coastal path and enjoyed a calm, restorative weekend together.
