The Experience

Here, the land is as much a part of the stay as the house. Nature is slowly being restored across the estate’s 750 acres, with Tamworth pigs, Exmoor ponies and cattle roaming freely, beavers appearing at dusk and wild white storks resting on chimney tops. Guided nature walks, foraging and yoga offer ways to get closer to it all, while evenings end in the outdoor sauna, or gazing up at the Milky Way.

At the heart of it sits a glorious house, with a history stretching back to the Domesday Book. A striking new suspended glass extension hangs above the water, creating a sociable kitchen, dining and living space with views across the walled gardens. There’s also a formal dining room for celebratory meals and a cosy snug with an open fire. Underfloor heating keeps things toasty.

Bedrooms (three king-size and four super kings, three of which can also be twins) look out over the land, gardens or stables. Three of the rooms share a large bathroom, the others each have their own.

Location

The neighbourhood

The house is set in a wooded valley – you're surrounded by nature and all you'll hear is birdsong. The land here has been worked since Neolithic times, with hut circles and old field walls on the hillside nearby, and a ruined medieval village with views across Bodmin Moor. St Breward (one mile) has an excellent village shop and pub. Camelford (five miles) has more choice.

Camilla

Camilla, who grew up locally, took over Hamatethy with her husband Yan in 2013, when it was a traditionally farmed estate. Having worked for Greenpeace, she has helped rewild nature here ever since. You'll be met by the onsite host who will show you around, talk you through the house and arrange any nature experiences or classes you might fancy, on the estate or beyond.
