The Experience

On sunny days you’ll be bathed in rays so leave the door to the sitting room open, choose from a collection of arty books and plonk yourself down on the leather sofa for a balmy doze. There’s a roomy feel, a TV that does everything including music, walls of exposed brick or stone, many of Clive’s photos to admire and a Scandinavian wood-burner that belts out the heat when the weather isn’t kind.

Cooks will be delighted with the attractive kitchen: all the kit you could need, a door to the terrace for al fresco meals, Sophie Conran Portmeirion pottery, cookery books and some welcoming treats – a bottle of wine, local ginger biscuits, popcorn, tea and a bottle of proper milk from Alkmonton dairy. Upstairs is another seating or work area and the peaceful, charming bedroom.

Saunter into town for independent shops, a good fishmonger and The Greenman public house and restaurant.

Come for much peace, quiet, leafy greenery and church bells - but you're a short hop into Ashbourne for restaurants, shops and a very interesting old church. Good walks from the door.

We loved this little cottage; it is comfortable and cosy and has been stylishly designed to have everything that you could need without losing any of the charm of the original almshouse. Clive and Mari are great hosts - very friendly and helpful without ever being intrusive. Wonderful!

Mari and Clive are so welcoming and the accommodation is superb - all the details are taken care of - it really is a home from home where you can really relax. The neighbourhood

There are views through the trees to the church, St Oswald's, described by George Eliot as “the finest mere parish church in the Kingdom”. You'll hear the bells as well. The Tissington Trail runs along the back of the cottage for walking and biking straight into the National Park and Dovedale. Chatsworth is a 20-minute drive, Haddon Hall with its magnificent Tudor gardens is 25.

  • Ashbourne is one of Derbyshire's finest and most vibrant market towns with a wealth of historic buidings, high quality shops and places to eat. Explore the town with one of our mini guide leaflets or during the summer take a free guided tour.
  • Peak District National Park, Steep limestone valleys like Dovedale, with its famed stepping stones, and Lathkill Dale characterise the park’s southern area, which is known as White Peak.
  • Chatsworth House is home to the Duke and Duchess of Devonshire, and has been passed down through 16 generations of the Cavendish family. Explore Chatsworth Garden, the ever-evolving garden surrounding one of Derbyshire’s most popular country houses.
  • The Tissington Trail provides a flat, traffic-free cycle route through the beautiful Peak District countryside. The picturesque, traditional Derbyshire village of Tissington is an easy three and a half mile cycle ride away.
  • Bakewell is Idyllically situated on the banks of the river Wye, the biggest town in the Peak District National Park's mellow stone buildings, medieval five-arched stone bridge and quaint courtyards are a magnet for painters, photographers and sightseers.
  • Alton Towers is a theme park resort located in the picturesque Staffordshire Moorlands near the village of Alton, a 20-minute drive. The resort incorporates a water park. It opened in 1980 and is the largest amusement park in the UK.

Introducing

Clive & Mari Booth

Clive is a local lad, a photographer (you're surrounded by his work) and filmmaker. Mari is a dental hygienist (hence the squeaky clean interiors). They are both imaginative creatives who adore to surprise and delight their guests. They live in another part of the building and know their patch well if you want help and advice, otherwise they will leave you to enjoy yourselves in this great space.
