The Experience
There’s much history in the stone walls and ancient beams – part of the novel Jane Eyre was set here – but the atmosphere is very relaxed and informal with fireside seating and cosy nooks, plus a snug and book-lined library area. The modern, neatly laid out dining area is separate, with a short seasonal menu of pub classics and some more elaborate dishes, plus a wood-fired pizza oven. Their suppliers are local farmers, brewers and artisan producers.
Bedrooms are individually decorated with striking wallpapers, rich fabrics, big lamps and antiques; bathrooms have thick towels, bath robes and White Company soaps and lotions. Breakfasts are fit for a king – along with the full English there are plant-based options, Derbyshire oatcake wraps and American pancakes.
Walk it off at Stanage Edge, swim in the 1930s lido in the village or explore wonderful Chatsworth House. Return to a pint of local ale and another peek at that menu.

The neighbourhood
The imposing gritstone escarpment of Stanage Edge is a five-minute drive for some superb walks. Chatsworth House is worth a day out for its fabulous art collection, tapestries and sculpture – the grounds are superb. Cyclists will be happy with the old railways and back lanes forming a network of cycling possibilities and gorgeous, unspoilt villages like Monyash and Youlgreave.
