The Experience
Quiet, upstairs bedrooms have pleasant views, family furniture and good reading lights. They share a sitting room, warmed by a woodburner and with a calm, easy-going atmosphere. You breakfast in here or in the conservatory: cereals, yogurt, homegrown fruit and free-range eggs, or the full caboodle for another fiver. A two-course supper can also be arranged – Clare and Mike both love to cook and all will be seasonal, local and often from their garden.
You’re just half a mile from the Tarka Trail, part of which gives you 30 miles of traffic-free cycling – calming for less confident riders, or a walking path. The wild waves of the north coast are close and Exmoor or Dartmoor hikes for the hearty are within an hours’ drive. Bring a takeaway back if you want (there’s a good Indian restaurant in Great Torrington) and Clare will provide plates etc.
You’ll feel very much at home sitting by the pond on a summer evening with a glass of wine – you may spot an otter.

We had a lovely warm welcome from Clare for our 2 night stay. Our room was very restful. We enjoyed the slow entertainment of watching her chickens enjoying their time outdoors beyond her lovely garden. Breakfast included delicious scrambled egg from those clever hens and fruit compote made with produce from the garden. The farmhouse is close to RHS Rosemoor and the Tarka trail both of which we visited. Clare also made a tasty evening meal for us, we felt really treated for our stay. Many thanks.

The setting is perfect – a truly peaceful rural location with lovely gardens and far-reaching views. We found the farmhouse was also perfectly positioned for us to explore the North Devon coast, with the Hartland coast a fairly short drive away. We are vegetarians and Clare was a wonderful, imaginative and really thoughtful cook – and was happy to cook for us almost every night! We especially enjoyed the plethora of fresh fruit and veg from the garden. And we found our stay was also tremendous value for money. Frizenham really is quite a find for those looking for a quiet getaway.

We have just made our second stay at this beautifully situated old house. The accommodation is first class. Clare being an accomplished chef, produces delicious meals with many of the ingredients grown in her own garden. If you seek peace and quiet this is the perfect place much enhanced by Clare and Michael being the perfect hosts.

Location
The neighbourhood
Great Torrington is a few minutes by car. Find the Victorian pannier market shops open all week and a bustling general market on Fridays and Saturdays. There are lots of cafés and restaurants, Dartington Crystal where you can see glass being blown and an arts centre with a programme of talks, films and events. RHS Rosemoor is nearby for impressive gardens to wander and plants to fill your boot.
Local points of interest from Clare & Mike Burnham
- If its history your interested in you may well have passed the tiny 14th century leper colony chapel in Taddiport. Then into Torrington up Mill Street you pass the terraced houses which would have housed workers from the once thriving glove industry.
- Visit the bustling pannier market and then the small quirky museum well worth a look in. A walk through cobbled streets and learn about one of the last battles of the bloody civil war with the brutal Battle of Torrington of 1646.
- The Plough Arts Centre offers a rather brilliant array of live theatre, concerts, films and good coffee. Further afield the Burton Arts Centre in Bideford has local and national visiting art exhibitions.
- For the sea, sand and surf lovers go North to the nearest beach 20 mins drive along the winding Torridge Valley to Westward Ho! Here you have an enormous sandbeach with Northam Burrows and visitors centre to inform you of the wildlife and local ecosystems
- RHS Rosemoor just a Devon valley away or 3 miles by road is one of the West Country’s most beautiful gardens and even if your not a gardener it’s a rather lovely place to visit, to have a good lunch, attend a workshop or just be inspired by the setting
- The Tarka trail part of the coast to coast path 1 mile from us gives easy walking or cycling. A beautiful walk/ride North towards Bideford taking in the River Torridge Valley and coastal village or south with woodland and open farmland towards Dartmoor.

Introducing
Clare & Mike Burnham
Clare and Mike moved here from Frampton on Severn so Clare could garden more extensively and Mike could have workshop space - you'll see some of his installations in the house. They've undertaken a huge restoration and landscaping programme, rear a small flock of rare breed sheep and enjoy sharing their home and garden with guests. It's an open door sort of place so you can unwind properly.
