The Experience
A very English scene with rolling green hills tumbling down to long sandy beaches and The Mount which sits apart from the hustle and bustle of Swanage in quieter Durlston. Here lovely local owners Elaine and Carl know exactly what makes a great get together and have thought of everything – a pool table disguised as a dining table, an ‘arty stuff’ drawer for budding artists and musical instruments for prodigies. Cooks will love the big colourful kitchen and there are long evenings to be spent crashed out on leather chesterfields heaped with velvet cushions, fire lit. Bedrooms at the front are elegant with sea views (one en-suite) but you won’t feel hard done by in the servants’ quarters, smaller but with iron beds and pretty curtains. Upstairs find two more en-suite bedrooms with views through the trees. There are two family bathrooms and a charming garden surrounds all – grab a colourful deckchair from the wall and spend the day on the lawn with a book. For days out there’s Swanage town with some great up-and-coming eateries, a steam train for littlies, or if you just want to get away from it all the coastal path is at hand for walking and wild swimming.

This is a fabulous house and was ideal for the whole family to be away for a few days. We were four generations – from great-grandparents, at 89 years old, down to a three-month baby. The pool table ended up being at the centre of the entertainment, there was a lovely open fire and The Mount was spacious enough for everyone to do their own thing…a key plus!!! Thanks so much for your help and support with our stay Elaine and for your clear directions. We are now thinking about making it an annual jaunt!

We are a group of 7 girlfriends and our visit to The Mount was our 4th long weekend away together. We all absolutely loved the house - it felt like we were being enveloped in a big warm hug when we walked through the front door! Elaine was a delight to deal with through the booking process and checked in by text whilst we were there. The rooms were all very comfortable and the house was extremely well equipped with everything we needed and more. We hired a chef to cook for us on the Saturday night and he was very happy with the kitchen. We wouldn't hesitate to recommend The Mount.

The Mount is an ideal house for a multi-generational gathering. There is plenty of space in the large rooms for different activities. We were five families including three toddlers. The facilities were excellent. The kitchen is fully equipped with nice crockery and pans etc. For inside entertainment there is an endless choice from musical instruments to ride on ladybirds. The pool table was a big hit. For outdoor activities it is so easy to get onto the coastal path up to Durlston Castle. The hosts Elaine and Carl were very friendly. We had a great time and would go there again.

We have just had at lovely stay at The Mount. Everything we hoped for was provided for and this made for a lovely relaxing few days. You have thought of everything! We were so impressed with all the little touches, the organic hand washes, bathrobes, super kitchen equipment, beautiful gifts, wood for the fire, games, toys, musical instruments and the knitting! Not to mention the very comfy beds. All in all it made our stay super comfy and a home from home - actually a bit nicer than home! It would be lovely to come back again.

Location
The neighbourhood
Local points of interest from Elaine Pearson & Carl Styants
- The Mount is a stone's throw from the Jurassic Coast & South West Coast Path. Enjoy stunning walks east towards Old Harry Rocks & Studland or west towards Kimmeridge & Durdle Door beyond. Even the short, coastal trot into town is spectacular.
- Artists including Paul Nash and Graham Sutherland were inspired by Swanage. Enid Blyton visited every year and liked to swim round the pier. Follow the Stone Trail to spot bits of imported London, including a tower from old London Bridge.
- Purbeck has the most diverse wildlife in Britain. Bats, owls & badgers visit the garden. Orchids, butterflies, puffins & peregrine falcons can be spotted in Durlston. RSPB Arne and Brownsea Island, of Autumnwatch fame, are close by.
- You can walk to historic Corfe Castle along the chalk ridge, with its epic views over Poole Harbour. Then visit the castle ruins, ancient pubs and artist studios, before catching a steam train back to Swanage.
- Worth’s famous Square & Compass pub is a rewarding destination for a four-mile coast walk or cycle ride. Enjoy a pint & pasty, gazing out to sea. Another favourite is the Scott Arms at Kingston. Bus there, then ramble over the heath to Corfe station.
- Swanage is a lively town with events year round. Festivals include: walking, literary, arts, jazz, folk, strings, blues, fish, triathlon & even pirates! Plus Lifeboat Week, Purbeck Marathon and sea rowing.

The Mount is quaint and beautiful. It has a great atmosphere – with large rooms, lots of space and something for everyone. We all loved the billiard table. The house is in a great location with plenty of parking and we would recommend it to anyone. We would love to go back.
