The Experience

Folk with a yen for a country escape close to the coast, and a taste for James Verner’s modern rustic design style will love the Wellhouse and next door Wellhayes Barn.

Light pours through tall windows into the house’s striking open-plan living space, with massive wood-burner. James’ furniture, and interesting art are dotted about. The barn is just as bright and lovely, with a wheelchair-friendly downstairs bedroom, an open-plan living area and an upstairs bedroom with long green views and wood-burner.

Both kitchens have all you need; catering can be arranged if you come as a group and there are excellent restaurants and markets nearby in Lyme Regis, Bridport and Axminster. Take a boat on, or a plunge into, the lake.  Wander the woods with red kites overhead; walk to Lyme Regis in under an hour.

Reviews

Wellhayes is breathtaking, the photos do not capture the magical atmosphere & space that has been created. The beauty of the lake is spectacular, the trees reflected, the stillness, the abundant wildlife (kestrel, nuthatch, lesser spotted woodpecker, owls, roe deer, foxes, & wild ducks) surrounds you. The wood fired sauna is a must have, it’s an intimate space in which to chat, directly overlooking the lake. The interior style is quirky, with incredible attention to detail & all modern comforts. I will be back. Thank you for a truly wonderful stay.

We loved staying in this beautiful place. Blissfully quiet and idyllic and immersed in nature. We loved the sauna and the lake and the walk into Lyme Regis is beautiful. The accommodation is absolutely top notch, warm and luxurious with lovely views of the trees and the lake. Can’t wait to stay again.

What can I say?! This place is quite simply heavenly! I arrived feeling a little broken & left feeling fixed. The most peaceful idyllic setting, warm, cosy house & friendly hosts. Every last detail is perfect- gorgeous bedding, well equipped kitchen; wood fires. The lake & sauna are just amazing. Will definitely be back.

There is a magical, healing atmosphere at Wellhayes, which is not captured in the photos. The land is that Wellhayes is nestled in is absolutely stunning, the lake with boat and sauna very much appreciated. Every comfort has been thought of, the bed was luxurious & the interiors are quirky, modern and extremely tasteful. We loved our stay and will defiantly return. Thank you.

We absolutely loved our time at Wellhayes, stylish, extremly comfortable and such a wonderful location to explore the beaches of the Jurassic coast. The BBQ was a wonderful addition and we even addle boarded on the lake! The whole family LOVED it. We plan to return next year.

Wellhayes is a unique little oasis tucked away in abundant nature but only a short drive from the beach and shops. The space is so lovingly created and maintained with all one could need. I was amazed at the artistic design of the space that also still feels so welcoming with a true sense of home. You couldn’t ask for a more tranquil or beautiful place to stay.

Chiara, London

What an amazing few days. Swam in a freezing pond and then dived into the beautiful sauna. Bliss. Fantastic hosts. Thank you for a wonderful stay 😊

Wonderful accommodation in a stunning location. Very comfortable beds in a cosy barn conversion. Well equipped kitchen and a lovely outdoor area overlooking the lake. Close to the pretty town of Lyme Regis, with great shops and restaurants.

Judith, London

A wonderfully peaceful place, off the beaten track and calming for the soul. Wonderful hosts. Really nice for a break from hectic life.

Emma, Gloucestershire

A slice of heaven. Beautifully decorated. Stunning surroundings. Everything has been thought of. An incredible place to come and unwind. The surrounding area is also beautiful with lots to do. Could not recommend staying here more!

Ocy, London

Delightful setting and cottage, we were able to relax very quickly. Great welcome basket upon arrival. The cottage is very stylish with some beautiful touches but it is also extremely comfortable and practical and very well planned out. The grounds are so peaceful and pretty it really was a very relaxing place to hang out but is also close enough to be able to explore all the local attractions and beautiful coastal towns and villages nearby. One thing it didn't have is any board games or playing cards which would be a small bonus we felt but easy so take some with you if you know.

The first and lasting impression is of warmth and light. James’s lovely modern furniture blends well with beautiful antique pieces, quirky headboards, good art and the delicious wood burners in two of the bedrooms. The piece de resistance has to be the gorgeous lake however, for a swim or a gentle row or just to lounge in one of the hammocks with a book. It would be a wonderful place to rent in its entirety for a special occasion

What a magical place! So tranquil and cosy. Thank you for the delicious welcome goodies. Tried lots of James' recommendations & enjoyed them all. We hope to return one day....

What a magical find. The location of The Wellhouse is truly magical, as is the home itself. We arrived to a roaring log fire and a food hamper which was a very thoughtful touch. The accommodation could not be better from the spacious bedrooms to the amazing open plan lounge and kitchen area. As a family of four we thoroughly enjoyed the walks from the front door and even spotted wild deer. The close proximity to the coastal towns coupled with the secluded location made this one of our most magical family holidays.

James, Nottingham

A wonderful house in an idyllic setting! The bed was one of the most comfortable we've slept in and the woodburner made for a cosy, warm environment while we enjoyed the stunning view through the lovely large glass windows. Highly recommended!

Liz, London

This is such a stunning place, totally removed from urban living, with everything on site you need to totally relax: beautiful house, grounds, BBQ and your own lake! I love the area, with the hubbub of Lyme regis, but the house is so tranquil to return to. The kids also just love the lake. We will be back. Thankyou.

Introducing

James Verner

The friendly Verners and their lurcher live in the Wellhouse and began the restoration and careful development of their chosen corner of rural Dorset in 2013. James grew up in the area and is a designer and furniture maker; his creativity makes their light-filled properties really stand out. They’ve poured energy into landscaping too and there are more plans in the pipeline. When Emma and James vacate the house, helpful housekeeper Kelly is on hand.
