The Experience

There’s a large open fireplace in the bar and old photographs of the village and pub back in the day. Not much has changed, with locals rubbing shoulders happily with walkers and their dogs popping in for a pint; on a rainy day it’s the sort of place you could sit by the fire and read a book or play cards. In the dining room you’ll find a menu of old favourites, together with more visionary and ambitious dishes, sometimes foraged, always local. Hand pumped ales and a thoughtful wine list complete the picture.

Bedrooms, up quite steep stairs, are full of charm with chunky wooden beds, colourful throws, plump pillows and deep windowsills with village or country views; bathrooms all have tubs for a good soak after a walk. The Cotswold Way can be joined just 2.5 miles down the road at Chipping Campden.

Breakfast is a feast – from Eggs Royale and Benedict to the full English or veggie versions.

Location

The neighbourhood

Ebrington is picture perfect and as well as the pub there's an interesting church with 13th-century beginnings to explore. There are superb walks on the Cotswold Way and the glorious gardens at Hidcote Manor and Kiftsgate Court are a ramble across fields. Chipping Campden is just down the road and has some lovely restaurants and shops. Broadway, with a great deli, is 8 miles.
