The Experience

Head up the hill to the vineyard at the top and the Stroud valleys spread out below you. It’s an area full of wooded hills, pretty villages, arty events – and inspiring artisans like the Woodchester team.

The suites are in a restored barn next to the fields of vines. Each has its own big living room downstairs – watch TV, warm your feet on the underfloor heating or by the gas log-burner. Order a continental basket that includes crumpets, croissants and granola, and rustle up your breakfast when you want. Admire fabulous valley or vineyard views from floor to ceiling windows; sip a Bacchus white or Pinot Rosé on your terrace or balcony after a day’s exploring.

Taster evenings are on offer and you can book one of their tours, which includes a visit to the winery, learning about the grapes and process and a tasting session. There’s a Cellar Door shop too, if you want to call in on your way home.

Reviews

Rob, Oxfordshire

Lovely visit, thoroughly enjoyed staying in this beautiful environment for a few days - very pleasant to walk down into Nailsworth to enjoy the town, it’s friendly people and it’s delicious food. The vineyard tasting and tour was excellent also, very welcoming and enthusiastic staff clearly passionate about their work!

Vanessa, East Horsley

What a wonderful place! We arranged for a wine tour which was excellent, well run and interesting and to stay afterwards in one of your barns. We throughly enjoyed ourselves and would recommend Woodchester Valley Vineyard experience to anyone.

Linda, Bristol

Excellent accommodation, with quality furnishings. We had Atcombe on the end. Dual aspect views with 2 outside seating areas and a huge bedroom and balcony There was also a walk-in shower on the ground floor. While there we took in the wine tasting and tour. Very interesting and 5 wines to sample. We preordered a breakfast hamper and evening hamper. Both consisted of fresh local produce. The only thing I could say was that there could have been a few more cracker nibbles with the wine.

Celia, Dursley

An amazing place; beautiful views of the valley, vines and hills up towards Minchinhampton. Very well appointed, good facilities and spacious. Very quiet and comfortable. Nothing to fault. Will be back soon I hope!

Simon, Devizes

Sorry for the broken wine glass! I was trying to wash up but it went wrong! The accommodation was faultless and a pleasure to be in. Very beautiful in the sunrise from the balcony over coffee. Did the vineyard tour which again was so very good. I can’t fault anything.

Location

The neighbourhood

There are many great walks across this part of the Cotswolds. You can join the Cotswold Way from behind the vineyard, the Laurie Lee Wildlife Way is a six-mile circular walk across the Slad Valley and there’s a canal towpath walk – or bike ride - from Stroud to Stonehouse. Nailsworth has heaps of good places to eat – a five-minute drive or 30-minute walk on a public footpath across fields. Stroud is not much further and has a lively Saturday market, bookshops and cafes. Westonbirt is a 15-minute drive, Cirencester 20 minutes – Bristol and Bath not much further.

Local points of interest from The Team at Woodchester Valley House

  • The guestrooms are located on a vineyard with a winery, tours and tastings are available on select dates, a short stroll from the accommodation. The Cellar Door shop where wines can also be tasted and purchased is open Mon-Sat 10am-6pm on the A46.
  • Woodchester valley vineyard is situated just 1,5 miles from the market town of Nailsworth. This thriving little town has a wide variety of shops and a great array of excellent restaurants, bars and pubs.
  • Stroud is brimming with independent shops and cafés and home to one of the best Farmers’ Markets (Saturday mornings) in the country, there are plenty of things to do in Stroud, described by Jasper Conran as ‘the Covent Garden of the Cotswolds’.
  • Woodchester Mansion just down the road, this Grade 1 listed Victorian Gothic style mansion was famously left unfinished when the family ran out of money in the 1870s. It was used as an army training ground in WWll.
  • The Cotswold Way. Offering 102 miles (164 KM) of magical discovery through the western edge of the Cotswold. From walking through picturesque villages to taking in the stunning views from the Cotswold escarpment, this is a must for walkers.
  • We are ideally located as a base to explore the Cotswolds and the towns of Cirencester, Cheltenham, Gloucester, Bath and Bristol are all within a 45 minute drive or less.

Introducing

The Team at Woodchester Valley House

Fiona Shiner grew up in Gloucestershire, spent 17 years in Hong Kong and then came back to settle in the South Cotswolds. Woodchester Valley has three vineyards, planted in 2007-2013, and includes areas where winemaking is recorded in the Doomsday book of 1086. The family-run vineyard now has 45 acres across the three sites, growing a range of different grape varieties. Their award-winning wines include white, rosé and sparkling.
