The Experience

The feel inside is uncluttered and well thought out – the smooth Scandi vibe encourages you to slow down. Seven acres of meadows and orchards surrounded by Corsican pines are criss-crossed with foot paths, children can safely romp and make dens, birds twitter overhead and on clear nights you’ll see a panoply of stars. You’ll also find a secret willow garden, perfect for a picnic or a quiet read. A public footpath takes you to the river Wye and gentle riverside walks.

Eat indoors or by the fire pit – you’ll find organic apple juice, marshmallows and chocolate waiting for you and a well-equipped kitchen if you’re inspired to cook. Hay-on-Wye with its many book shops also has good pubs and independent shops for stocking up. If the weather is playing up it’ll be fine indoors by the wood-burner while you gaze through floor to ceiling windows at the drama.

Comfortable beds have Welsh woollen blankets and there’s space for an extra child. Drift off in countryside peace.

Reviews

The stay in the Luxe Lodge was simply flawless. From bending over backwards to furnish requests before arriving ie having no feathers in the bedding, to the friendly staff we met around the site. The accommodation was finishing to the highest standard, perfectly clean and everything that was needed could be found. The log burner and fire pit had been left stacked ready to light and the hot tub was actually hot! (And clean!!) Could not recommend this place enough and will certainly return for another peaceful weekend.

We had such a lovely stay. Two of us for a few days mid week in late November/December. Such a relaxing get away - with the hot tub, the walks, the wood fire, the peacefulness- just what we needed. Would really recommend this to anyone. Would recommend bringing a good book (or browsing hay for one - even better), some good walking shoes, jacuzzi clothing, and also going to ‘off grid gourmet’. Thank you and can't wait to come again.

Rhys, Bath

Our lodge at Cynefin Retreats was the perfect combination of luxury, comfort and cosiness for a girls' weekend away. The space was so well thought out and well-equipped with everything we needed to make it feel like a 'home away from home'. On a chilly November weekend, my friends and I made the most of the lodge's beautiful outlook from inside the hot tub, before retreating to the warmth of the log burner - heavenly! It was lovely to get outside and explore nature right on the doorstep of the lodge, as well as Hay Bluff just a short drive away for a longer hike. A perfect relaxing weekend!

The lodges are dreamy. The bed was one of the comfiest I've slept in. The open plan space downstairs is great for cooking, eating, relaxing as a group but without being on top of each other. We played several games they provided and cooked up a feast on the firepit one eve, using one of their impressive cookbooks for recipes and using the amazing cast iron cookware! All really well thought through with special touches. We got lucky with the weather and there wasn't a cloud in the sky one eve, making the star gazing truly world class - we enjoyed from our bubbling hot tub. Amazing place.

Adam, Bristol

We had a wonderful family visit & thought the lodges at Cynefin Retreats were absolutely terrific - spacious, stylish & with lots of clever & considered little touches that really elevated the entire experience. The kids loved being able to roam free in the woodlands, the hot tub was a massive hit & we really made the most of the outdoor fire pit for BBQ's and marshmallows. Star gazing was another real highlight. Highly recommend for those looking for some quality time out in beautiful, natural surroundings. Was great having Hay so close too!

Peter, London

Such a peaceful stay! We took our time in the rainfall shower in the morning overlooking the beautiful countryside, hopped into Hay-on-Wye for the bookshops, stargazed from the hot tub, and roasted marshmallows on the firepit...all the lush mod cons you can need, and perfectly situated in a lovely part of the world.

Location

The neighbourhood

Walk, cycle, wild swim and climb hills for wonderful views in the National Park. You can walk down to a picnic spot by the river and launch your canoe or paddle board. Hay-on-Wye is three miles for an independent cinema, pubs, a book browse and restaurants: Tomatitos Tapas Bar serves excellent locally-sourced food along with artisan bread. The Old Electric Shop is worth a visit too: a small café and vintage shop.

Local points of interest from Lorna Felgate

  • If getting out and about is more your bag, there are a wealth of options nearby to explore. Just three miles up the road is Hay-on-Wye, the ‘Town of Books’, famous for its Hay Festival, just three miles up the road.
  • Though small, Hay is a honeypot of culture with its winding streets lined with unique, independent shops asking to be explored.
  • In the centre of Hay is the fabulous, newly renovated Hay Castle, one of the great medieval defence structures still standing on the Welsh-English borders.
  • The local landscapes around Cynefin offer fabulous opportunities for taking in the great outdoors, be that on foot, bike, horseback, or canoe. There is something for everyone, ranging from gentle ambles to more intrepid adventures.
