The
Experience

The gardens at Sissinghurst Castle were designed by Vita Sackville-West. They’re some of the loveliest in the land and if you stay at this charming village pub, you can stroll over after breakfast, through apple orchards and bluebell woods. As for the Milk House, it’s a great base from which to explore – stylish, welcoming, nicely priced. It’s also a place for excellent food, with seasonal produce mostly sourced within 20 miles. In summer, you decant onto a big terrace with an outside bar and a wood-fired pizza oven, not a bad spot for a crispy margherita and a glass of Pimms. There’s a duck pond, a lawned garden, views over open country, even a four-day festival in August (local bands, theatre, face painting, lots of food). Interiors have an easy style: woven willow lampshades, a sofa in front of the fire, a timber-framed dining room for fabulous food, perhaps twice-baked Stilton soufflé, grilled mackerel with roasted fennel, After Eight crème brûlée with brandy butter brioche. Beautiful bedrooms are crisply uncluttered. Expect chic fabrics, super beds, excellent bathrooms, a sofa if there’s room.
