The Portobello Hotel

Notting Hill Gate, London

Iconic London hotel which draws an A-list crowd and stands in peace close to Portobello Road, with cafés and restaurants all around

21 rooms

Rooms sleep 1 – 2

In 1969, in the days of Bowie and the Rolling Stones, this small hotel opened its doors, making it London’s first boutique hotel. It was a new idea, a hip little place, not dull and formal like other hotels, but relaxed and friendly with lots of colour and a bohemian feel. These days, not much has changed, and it remains a popular base for artists, movie stars and musicians, who come for its seductive combination of privacy, informality and style. It stands in the middle of Notting Hill, peacefully hidden away on a side street, with Portobello Road and the shops and cafés of Westbourne Grove a short stroll. The sitting room has a beautiful pine bay window, then fresh flowers, deep sofas and an honesty bar, and you can eat here, too, perhaps a Greek salad, a club sandwich, butternut squash ravioli. Colourful bedrooms hit the spot. Lots have claw-foot baths, you’ll find antique furniture, coffee machines, robes in the bathroom, sofas in bigger rooms; those at the back overlook communal gardens. A refurbishment is underway, with six chic rooms already completed. Good restaurants are nearby.

The neighbourhood

Local points of interest from James Semenowycz

  • On the weekend, Portobello Road – the world’s largest antiques market – springs to life. Worth a visit with street performers, food stalls, vintage clothing, antiques and so much more.
  • For the culturally minded, a short trip will bring you to the Natural History Museum and the Victoria and Albert Museum, the latter being the world’s largest museum of decorative art and design.
  • A 5 minute walk to Notting Hill Gate Underground Station, you can see the sites of London within a short tube ride - St Pauls Cathedral, Westminster Abbey, Big Ben and The Houses of Parliament can all be reached well within 30 minutes.
  • A 2 minute walk from the hotel and guests will find themselves on Westbourne Grove with its independent shops, sidewalk cafes, restaurants and designer boutiques - a small village in central London.
  • With delightful green spaces nearby - Hyde Park and Holland Park - are ideal for picnicking, a leisurely walk or morning jog.
