The Experience

You’ll feel pleased you booked this enchanting open-plan space with thick oak floors and doors, a high ceiling, books and maps, good art and a happy mingling of antiques with pretty fabrics and well thought-out lighting. Everything apart from the bathroom is in one space but there’s no feeling of being hemmed in – it’s light, airy and cosy all at once.

The sumptuous bed is well dressed with feather and down pillows and duvet, you can snuggle under extra wool blankets and you’ll find soft dressing gowns. A tub in the room may invoke mutual bathing or send you scuttling to the separate shower room for privacy and Norfolk soap. Through sliding glass door there are two seating areas with tables and chairs, a firepit and a lawn. Watch grand sunsets from here.

Find supper or breakfast waiting, along with popcorn and crisps. On wet days you can laze by the wood-burner and watch the drama unfold outdoors while you stay dry and warm.

Reviews

A gorgeous place to stay if you want to get away from it all. It's beautifully designed inside and doesn't feel cramped at all, even though everything except the bathroom is in one room. There's a wonderful pingo trail, nature lovers and birdwatchers will be very happy, walkers can tramp for miles and the coast is near for a day out at the beach. The owner, Katharine is very warm and kind.

Nicola, Sawday's Inspector

Beautiful accommodation which is steeped in history. I stayed in the Goat Shed for three nights and could not recommend it more. Wonderful facilities and has everything you need!

Merrow, London

We had a very peaceful and comfortable few days at the Goat Shed which has been beautifully restored and decorated. Katharine is extremely kind and attentive and made us feel so welcome as well as providing delicious evening meals for us. We enjoyed days out to Holkham, the gardens at East Ruston Old Vicarage and the local pingo trail. We would love to return!

Location

The neighbourhood

Explore Thompson Common for rare flowers and insects or join the Great Eastern Pingo Trail - seven miles for the whole thing and all flat. Thompson has a pub, The Chequers Inn, a post office and a church. Watton is 3 miles for butcher, baker, antiques. The Leaping Hare restaurant at Wyken Vineyards is 20 miles for a treat, plus there's the stunning gardens too (closed in winter). The coast is one hour.

Local points of interest from Katharine Wolstenholme

  • You can go for long walks from The Goat Shed without getting in your car. We are surrounded by land owned by Norfolk Wildlife Trust and The Woodland Trust.
  • There is a good pub in the village only a mile from The Goat Shed. A lovely walk on a summer's evening.
  • We are within an hour of most popular tourist things to do in Norfolk, Suffolk & Cambridgeshire.
  • The Norfolk coast is an easy car journey from The Goat Shed.
  • Sit in the west facing private garden and enjoy our beautiful big Norfolk skies and stunning sunsets.
  • Norfolk has the largest concentration of medieval churches in the world and our church (only 5 minutes' walk) was built by our ancestors in 1349.

Introducing

Katharine Wolstenholme

Warm and friendly Katharine does B&B in the farmhouse, just as her mother Lavender did for years (with Sawday's). She is a veritable domestic goddess who adores cooking and making things look lovely, as well as caring for many animals and their new Labrador Linda. Richard and Katharine moved here in 2011 but Katharine's family have owned the farm for several hundred years - these are her roots.
