The Experience
Just a few miles from Oxford, this thatched and beamed building, The Mason’s Arms, is filled with original art. An open fire crackles in the well-stocked bar on chilly days – sip a pint of something delicious from Hook Norton Brewery while you check out the menu. It’s mercifully short and Head Chef Luke turns out pub classics beautifully with a few surprises and glorious puddings.
Bedrooms (and some suites, one sleeping four) have the most gorgeous cottons and linens, clouds of goose down, fluffy robes, mini-bars and treats. Wake to a full English in the dining room or out on the terrace if it’s warm. The coffee is good and strong, there are pancakes, smashed avocados on sourdough and good homemade granola with fruits and yogurt. Set off on oodles of footpaths from the door, visit the church with medieval wall paintings in the village.
Head for the bar after a day of exploring or walking, sit in the garden, relish the peace.

We think you'll love
- The food, and the very laid-back atmosphere in the bar and dining room
- All the art in the bedrooms, the home-baked cookies and the tempting treats waiting for you
- Sitting in the large garden on a summer evening, checking the menu
You should know
- The lighting is gentle in the bedrooms – bring a head torch if you're a serious reader and over 40
- The Shepherd's Hut is right by the garden and marquee so could be noisy if they have an event

Location
The neighbourhood
An incredibly quiet village on the extreme edge of the Cotswolds with a lovely old church. Footpaths start from the door and the road is quiet so borrow wellies or bikes and head off. Woodstock is a 17-min drive for Blenheim Palace and some independent shops. Nearby is Bladon churchyard where Winston Churchill is buried, and Oxford is 30 mins for University, galleries, museums and many restaurants.

Introducing
Charlie & Justin Salisbury
Justin Salisbury started his small boutique chain almost by accident when he took over his parents' run down guesthouse in Brighton when he was just 20. He did that place up on a shoestring by inviting local artists to decorate the rooms in return for a free stay. This turned out to be his winning formula and together with his wife Charlie they now have several Artist Residences.
One of my favourite hotels to stay in the UK! I absolutely love staying here. The welcome is always so warm and friendly from staff and the decor is just gorgeous. Food is also superb too.
