The Experience
Step through the grand oak door to a tangle of winding corridors, ancient beams and ‘mind your head’ doorways. Once a coaching inn, this medieval building is full of nooks to disappear into – deep sofas by the fire, a minstrel’s gallery above the dining room, and the Airmen’s Bar, its walls graced with wartime signatures.
Bedrooms come in every shape – some vast, with four-posters and wonky ceilings; others sit in newer wings with a more contemporary feel. All have crisp linen and cosy robes, with beds turned down while you’re at dinner. Enjoy seasonal menus in the Mess Call 487 brasserie, or candle-lit dinners and afternoon teas in The Gallery. Dogs are welcome throughout much of the building, and children of every age are made to feel at home.
In summer, head for the secluded courtyard or the flower-filled secret garden at the back. Next door, The Weavers’ House boutique spa has an outdoor heated vitality pool, six treatment rooms, a sauna, steam room and sun terrace.

Location
The neighbourhood
You're on the high street of one of the best-preserved medieval towns in the country, with timbered houses at every turn and a fascinating guildhall museum. Long Melford, with its antique shops and grand hall, is close by, as is Constable country at Flatford Mill. Sudbury station is seven miles, Bury St Edmunds is ten.
Local points of interest from The Hotel Folk
- Lavenham Guildhall - a piece of history in itself is one of our village's finest medieval monuments. Discover the history of the village and in particular its strong association with the cloth industry, from which it gained so much of its former wealth.
- Church of St. Peter and St. Paul - a glorious building of near cathedral proportions dating from around the beginning of the 16th century at the height of Lavenham's prosperity. Incorporating a wealth of oak and stone carvings.
- Crooked House - one of Lavenham's most famous landmarks, this slanted house is a true icon of the village. Warped timbers have caused the upper floor to look distinctly crooked, hence the famous name!
- The streets of Lavenham were used as a background for the scenes in Godric's Hollow in the film Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1, a main feature being DeVere House.
- Weavers' House Spa - a place to relax, unwind and take some time for yourself. A good spa guide 5 bubble spa which is not to be missed.
- Lavenham Airfield - a part of history that we at The Swan are deeply connected to, Lavenham Airfield is open for pre-booked tours during the summer months.
