The Experience

Much of this fascinating house was restored by visionary designer Mark Wilkinson. He’s left an amazing legacy; every bit of wood was carved or planed by his company – from the kitchen, bathrooms and bookshelves to the unique furniture. He was likened by a journalist as a mix between Caractacus Potts and Peter Pan for his inventiveness and sense of humour – find quirky pulley systems on bathroom doors and to lift the chandeliers up and down in the enormous vaulted sitting room, and so much more.

Cynthia and family have a long history of friendly hosting and they’re very happy to share their magical home with guests. There’s a gym, six acres of garden to explore – and a wonderful little round house by one of the lakes for chats by the wood-burner.

Bedrooms are all different: Art Deco headboards in some, beams in another, silk covers and curtains galore. Cynthia collects cookery books (hundreds) and breakfast will be good.

Reviews

Adrian, Banstead

Brook House was one of the most memorable of the many B&Bs we've stayed in over many years. Being designed down to the last detail by Mark Wilkinson, it is truly unique. Our room was delightful. Cynthia is the perfect hostess - apart from serving sumptuous breakfasts, she made us very welcome indeed and we enjoyed a great deal of stimulating conversation, which was a real bonus. We look forward to coming back.

Alan, Guildford

Amazing house with beautifully crafted fittings only thing more amazing was Cynthia's hosting with lots of lovely touches and touching stories of her and Marks time together. Not to mention the wonderful breakfasts in the beautiful dinning room.

Graham, Bristol, UK

We loved our stay here. The house and grounds are stunning. Cynthia was the perfect host - ever happy to help with arrangements and chat about the house. Everything was very, very homely. The breakfast was, well, simply fantastic - plentiful and of the highest quality. We're already thinking of the next visit ..

Louise, Sydney

Brook House was the perfect place to visit family in the area and Cynthia, with her faithful hounds, were the perfect hosts. Growing up nearby we had long been fans of Mark’s amazing cabinetry. It was a dream come true to be surrounded by such wonderful artistry. The room was so comfortable and the breakfast so delicious, the hardest part was getting motivated to leave each morning. Thankfully I have good reason to return, hopefully soon and often!

Jenny and John, Rustington, West Sussex

We enjoyed a lovely stay at Brook House in Bromham. We were made to feel very welcome, the house is beautiful, and a tribute to the wonderful designer Mark wikinson who created it. The rooms are lovely with all you will need, and the breakfasts were wonderful. Cynthia is a lovely hostess.

Location

The neighbourhood

On the outskirts of Bromham village, and the drive up to the house is through woodland. Bowood House and gardens are a 15-minute drive; Lacock Abbey and village are a bit closer – they’ve been used as film locations for Pride & Prejudice, Cranford, Emma and the Harry Potter films. Castle Combe, picturesque village and home to the car and cycle racetrack, is 15 miles. Bath and Stonehenge are within 20.

Local points of interest from Cynthia Wilkinson

  • What do Harry Potter, Pride and Prejudice, Cranford and Downton Abbey have in common? Lacock! In five minutes you're in the beautiful, historic village of Lacock. Explore the abbey, buy handmade gifts or enjoy a beer in one of the gorgeous pubs!
  • Bath is one of the most beautiful cities in the UK and is only 30 minutes away. Shopping, beautiful buildings, the Roman Baths, fantastic restaurants, Thermae Bath Spa with it's roof top pool ... the list goes on. You could even catch the rugby at the REC.
  • Bowood House & Gardens is 5 minutes away and boasts an impressive resume for the perfect family day out; an adventure playground for the kids, golfing for Dad and a spa for Mum. If they're out, don't miss the unbelievable Rhododendrons - simply magical!
  • "Lions, Tigers & Bears oh my" Longleat Safari Park offers some wonderful experiences for the whole family to enjoy; Feed wild birds as they sit on your head, explore Longleat House, visit Anne the rescued Elephant! I'd just be careful of the monkeys …
  • You're just a stones throw away from some of the most ancient stones in the world, Avebury and Stonehenge. Just 10 minutes from Avebury, Silbury Hill and West Kennet Longbarrow and a mere 40 minutes from UNESCO World Heritage site, Stonehenge.
  • Antique hunting in Marlborough and Hungerford is an absolute must for anyone wanting to pick up something special or even just peruse the Aladdin's Caves in these two quintessentially English towns. The independent shops and restaurants are to die for too

Introducing

Cynthia Wilkinson

Mark and Cynthia Wilkinson moved to Brook House in 1999; they spent 11 years building and restoring the house as well as workshops and stable block. Mark sadly died in 2017. Along with Cynthia, various family members live on site - Victoria, Greg and Becks; there will always be someone on hand to welcome guests as they need to be buzzed through the gates. They’re all absolutely charming.
