The Experience
The house has all the quirks of a Grade II* listed building – ancient beams and mullioned windows – and it’s smack in the middle of a charming Cotswolds village. Sunny mornings are for coffee in the courtyard and wandering round Sherston’s quaint streets. Plan a countryside walk with the inn’s maps, stroll through the Arboretum, or visit pretty Tetbury – its boutiques and antiques are a 15-minute drive.
Owner Rupert is based in London so local Chris will leave breakfast things in the fridge, as well as logs, kindling and flowers. The kitchen is well-equipped with Le Creuset pans and all you need for cooking for a group, the larder has a good stash of essentials and the village shop is just across the road.
Stop by for an afternoon ale at the fantastic Rattlebone pub and pick up a bottle for dinner from Sherston Wine or Balcony House Cellars on your way home – or drive 30 minutes to Bath or Bristol for the evening.

The 'Old Swan' is an ideal property for our '3 Generation + Dog' annual holiday. Many happy hours have been spent around the kitchen table and in the very comfortable lounge. The house is warm and well equipped with ample sleeping accommodation for all. Sherston is a friendly village with a well stocked shop and an excellent dining pub.We can recommend the 'Shallowbrook Lane' and 'The Cliff' walks although in autumn take care, and wear waterproof footwear!

Myself and a group of friends have just booked our third stay in Old Swan House. We love it The house is spacious, charming and well equipped and the location is excellent The property is literally a few steps away from a cafe, an excellent pub/restaurant and a small but impressively stocked shop. There’s lots to do and see in the area including a number of walks The owner of Swan House has helpfully left a list of 10 of the best We completed five on our last visit and are returning to tackle the remainder later this year.

Wow! We really enjoyed our stay at the Swan. We are visiting from the U.S. and were amazed that the inn is older than our country! Super convenient location for our visit to Bath and we enjoyed discovering Malmesbury and Tetbury. Loved the Rattlebone (and his story!) Rupert left super detailed, helpful recommendations. It was a wonderful visit.

Location
The neighbourhood
The old coaching inn has a rich past including housing Italian POWs in WW2 and then being a Lloyds bank - Rupert lovingly took it on and updated the inside a year ago. Castle Combe, Bath and Bristol are all within striking distance, Malmesbury with its historic Abbey is just five miles away and Highgrove Royal Gardens are a 10 minute drive. The Cotswolds is teeming with golf clubs, and there’s polo at Cirencester.
Local points of interest from Rupert Lang
- Westonbirt Arboretum is less than a 10 minute drive or decent walk from the cottage. It is one of the finest tree collections in the world spread over approximately 600 acres, the arboretum is a fantastic day out for the entire family.
- The historic market town of Tetbury is a perfect place to spend an afternoon. Famous for its extensive range of antique shops, now boasting a wealth of stylish boutiques, charming cafes and the ever popular Highgrove shop.
- Malmesbury is a pretty hilltop market town steeped in history and offers visitors over 400 listed buildings, a 15th century Market Cross, a ruined 7th century Benedictine abbey and many independent shops, cafes and traditional pubs.
- As Highgrove is just over 10 minutes from the property, we are the perfect place to stay if you wish to enjoy the Royal gardens. Having taken over 35 years in the making they are now considered some of the most creative and inspiring in the UK.
- Situated within 30 minutes of Bath, Bristol, Cheltenham and a whole host of beautiful Cotswold towns and villages. The Old Swan has great links to the M4 and M5, making getting to and exploring from effortless.
- The cottage is in an ideal location to visit the estate and gardens which are home to The Duke and Duchess of Beaufort. It is also a perfect property to stay whilst attending the annual Badminton Horse Trials.

Introducing
Rupert Lang
Animal-lover Rupert is based in West London but works as a locum vet and travels all around Britain helping ailing cattle! He wanted a place in the West Country and bought this place a year ago after falling in love with Sherston. He is really passionate about the house and area and loves sharing it with guests.
A perfect home for Christmas and New Year’s! We stayed at Rupert’s house over Christmas and New Year with six people and a dog, and we had a wonderful time. From the moment we arrived, we felt integrated into the village life – everyone we met was incredibly friendly. The village itself has a lot to offer: the cosy pub was a lovely spot to gather, and the café right next door to the house is highly recommended. The small shop in the village was surprisingly well-stocked, and we found everything we needed. We would highly recommend the old swan and would love to return some day!
