The Experience

Journey through Yorkshire’s finest scenery, then drop down into the cobbled yard where this refined Victorian farmhouse sits on the side of a secluded valley – the views are fabulous. Come together for family suppers in the large kitchen, stoke up the fire when the weather isn’t playing, sleep in cosy, view-filled bedrooms with sleigh beds, original art and more of those views.

Fish on the river at the bottom of the fields and spot deer or perhaps an otter if you’re patient. Across the fields you’ll find a vaulted barn with a heated indoor pool, sauna and Jacuzzi. There’s a gym too with table tennis and table football plus your own tennis court and football pitch. This is fabulous walking and cycling country – the whole of the Yorkshire Dales are yours to discover.

Take the scenic road to the market town of Richmond or further into Swaledale – there’s a reassuring timelessness to it all. Julia can also arrange yoga, therapy treatments, bike hire and art workshops.

Amazing house. Fantastic facilities. Beautiful location. You'll find few nicer places to stay. The kids loved the Highland cows and the swimming pool. The only thing I'd change was the very late check in and early checkout but I think this was a COVID safety measure.

Beverley, Cheshire

Lovely, comfortable house in a beautiful, isolated setting in the Swaledale valley overlooking the River Swale and surrounded by fields. The house is reached down a very bumpy, stony track (about 750 metres), so you really are in quite a remote location - your only neighbours will be sheep and cattle. The 'leisure facilities' are a 5-10 minute walk away across some fields but they are worth the walk. The lovely warm and large indoor swimming pool was a particular treat. The host is very attentive and was clearly taking the coronavirus-driven need to clean and distance very seriously.

We were incredibly lucky to have a booking just 3 weeks after the accommodation reopened after lockdown. The Old Vicarage is incredibly beautiful, spacious and well appointed accommodation. Our stay was nothing short of a dream come true after the events of 2020! Julia has gone to great measures to ensure full compliance with the list of Covid safety measures meticulously, but in a way that does not detract nor intrude on comfort. We were so lucky to visit the cattle with the kids and loved our daily swim.

Our stay at the Old Vicarage couldn’t have been more perfect! We spent a long weekend here for my mum’s 70th birthday and it was so lovely. The location is absolutely stunning - the most beautiful countryside with Highland Cattle wandering around. The house is gorgeous and has everything you’d need with lots of extra luxury touches too - including a very thoughtful birthday hamper for my mum. The pool, gym and sauna are excellent and made for a very relaxing break. Will definitely be back!

I think I can honestly say that The Old Vicarage is the nicest place we have ever stayed. A definite home from home, lovely and clean with comfortable and spacious rooms. The welcome hamper was such a lovely touch and Julia was on hand to say hello and introduce us to the amazing facilities and her beautiful herd of Highland cattle. We couldn't have asked for a more perfect weekend and will hope to return before too long. Thank you so much

Oct We had a second wonderful stay at the Old Vicarage to celebrate our 30th Wedding Anniversary with our family. Once again we delighted in the leisure facilities (which we even more appreciated during the tense 24hours waiting for news of our first grandchild) Julia is an excellent host not only providing a delicious hamper of local produce but also in offering support & sharing in our special family time. We were saddened that our daughter didn’t get to stay with us however she did get to visit with Daisy. So I can honestly say the Old Vic is ideal for all ages from 4 days to 78 years.

The Old Vicarage nestles in a stunning Swaledale valley, the views really are breathtaking. I felt immediately at peace on entering the house, with its spacious interior and soft furnishings in earthy tones. The house is spotlessly clean and very well equipped - there's even baking equipment.

We had an amazing week at the Old Vicarage. Total privacy, down a long private road, with amazing views of the Swale valley in 3 directions. The house is great: spacious and full of lovingly restored woodwork, comfortable beds and stunning views. The pool etc. was over and above what we expected - great for the children who spent hours each day in the pool, and for the adults who relaxed in the sauna/steam room/gym etc. Trips to the river were also a big highlight. We hope to come again!

Emily, Leeds

A comfortable, spacious and well-equipped house in splendid isolation, this was a perfect base for a family get-together. Both house and leisure facilities were immaculate and Julia ensured a warm welcome. The house is situated in stunning countryside with sweeping views. The fields and skies teem with wildlife and the call of the curlew.

Jane, Bridlington

We were a party of ten, two families of four with children of 13, 11, 8 and 5, and ourselves (grandparents). The house, which is isolated but set in beautiful countryside, is quiet, very comfortable and with excellent bathrooms. The leisure facilities - including a magnificent heated indoor pool, jacuzzi, sauna, steam room, fully equipped fitness centre with, additionally, table tennis and table football and - important for everyone - an excellent music system - were an immediate hit with all ages. Our hostess Julia was very responsive and helpful. Strongly recommended.

Gideon, Brighton

As a family we have been somewhat disappointed with the quality and high price of several ‘old’ houses we have rented over the past 14 years but The Old Vicarage is definitely not one of them! Excellent communication from Julia (the owner) on booking, pre arrival information and guided tour on arrival. The welcome pack was excellent, everything you would need on arrival and beyond, along with a large basket of fresh fruit. Highly recommended by our 3 generations we will definitely return.

Keith, PRESTON

The farm track that leads to the house could be an issue for some sports cars but it takes you to an idyllic remote location perfect for time with family & friends (surprisingly serviced by supermarket deliveries). The owner Julia was warm and welcoming and helpful throughout our stay. The house was clean & well appointed throughout. The leisure facilities (indoor swimming, tennis court & gym) are at a standard better than many nice hotels. We hired a chef for the week and she found everything she needed. I can’t recommend this place enough.

Dan, Taipei

Stayed for a week with the family to celebrate a 70th birthday. House is extremely comfortable; the pool and gymnasium are absolutely first class - supplemented with steam room and jacuzzi. All set in the most wonderful countryside. For a very special holiday I would recommend it highly.

Location

The neighbourhood

Follow the farm track through the fields – you’re tucked away, far from prying eyes and town hustle. Swaledale is God’s Own County at its most resplendent – the northernmost of the Yorkshire Dales with wild moors, waterfalls and meadows to cross on country walks. There are no shops in nearby Marrick, but you’re only five miles from Richmond with plenty of shops, pubs, restaurants, tea rooms and markets.

Local points of interest from Julia Carr

  • Wildlife is all around The Old Vicarage from the curlews and golden plovers in the meadows to the badger and deer making their way to and from the nearby river.
  • If you like culture then a trip to the Georgian Theatre Royal in nearby Richmond is a must. Built in 1788, it is Britain's most complete Georgian playhouse. Interesting daily guided 'behind-the-scenes' tours as well as varied live performances.
  • History buffs should visit nearby Bolton Castle - a spectacular medieval fortress completed in 1399. Mary Queen of Scots was imprisoned here.
  • This part of Yorkshire is a cyclist's paradise and the Dales Bike Centre in the hamlet of Fremington (a mile or so away) hires mountain bikes and runs courses for beginners and enthusiasts alike. It also has a great cafe serving home-made food and cakes.
  • The Old Vicarage is surrounded by meadows and has its own private stretch of river - perfect for picnics or skimming stones.
  • Miles and miles of footpaths and country lanes with plenty of walks and cycle routes from the doorstep. Walk to the pretty village of Reeth via ancient Marrick Priory and discover the Nun's Wood on the way.

Introducing

Julia Carr

Julia lives just two small fields along the valley with her three sons – it’s unlikely you’ll need her but she’s on call all the time if you do. She’ll meet you at The Old Vicarage to show you around before leaving you to your stay. The Highland cattle you’ll see grazing nearby are hers. They are very friendly and she is happy to introduce you to them. This is often a big hit with children, particularly if there are any newly born calves.
