The Experience

A dramatic and remote setting on Mull’s wild northwest coast for this 1,900-acre slice of nature where cattle and sheep roam happily alongside birds, orchids and wildlife. Two bumpy miles and four gates from the road, in a cluster of three sea-facing crofters’ cottages (a mile from the owners’ farmhouse), your open-plan traditional ‘blackhouse’ melts into the landscape.

Stock up for your whole stay and it’s a magical place for a couple or a small family – and blissfully free of mod cons with no TV but plenty of games and books and a wood-burner to keep you warm. You’ll see red deer on the hill by day and shooting stars at night – if you’re lucky you may see the Northern Lights.

The coast is a ten-minute ramble and Calgary Beach is three miles away; build sandcastles, swim in the ocean, and watch for otters and red throated divers.

Reviews

Anna, Ripon

Treshnish is our happy place. The headland is a complete world, full of wildlife, and I could stay on it for ever! Carolyne and Somerset earn their living with the farm and the cottages, and we, as guests, get to share the beauty and quietude , leaving the smallest of footprints, as everything is environment-friendly and sustainable. The cottages are warm, comfortable (gorgeous beds and bedding), and decorated in a beautiful and unique way. West is Best!

Kate, Petersfield

We’ve stayed in West many times over many years and have put family and friends in there if we’re spread across theTreshnish properties. It is my favourite property. Set a little apart with the aspect that looks out to sea it is both light and roomy but also warm and cosy if the weather closes in. The outdoor space isn’t overlooked at all so you can have peaceful picnic lunches there if you don’t feel like going on an expedition. When I go to a happy place in my head it’s reading my book in the garden at West

The Isle of Mull is beautiful and quiet with extraordinary wildlife. Treshnish Farm is situated at a lovely part of the Island. We have stayed in cottage Duill with a stunning view over the sea and the coastline. The house is very comfortable with woodburner, sunroom and good matrasses. The landlady Carolyne and landlord Sumerset were very kind. You can start a wonderful walk with spectacular views from the farm. The wifi is good. The sunset often magnificent!

A wonderful setting. We stayed in studio cottage which is beautifully decorated and furnished, with lovely views to the sea and the sunset from the sunroom. Fabulous! We will definitely be returning!

Location

The neighbourhood

There's not much civilisation around - you're 15 minutes down an uneven track from the main farmhouse. Walk for miles along the coast and back home over the hill, retracing the footsteps of the folk who built the cottage about 200 years ago; there are sites of earlier history too, remains of a dun and a fort as well as a late medieval chapel. The wildlife diary in the cottage hints at the flora and fauna you might see, and a Mull and Iona Food Trail map lists eating places and shops that offer island produce - including the nearest shop in Dervaig, a 20-minute drive.

Local points of interest from Carolyne Charrington

  • There is a lovely walk from Croig pier to Port na Ba. See if you can find the painted stone village in the sands...
  • The field that West Cottage sits in has been selected as one of the Coronation Meadows project, run by Plantlife. Our field is a donor meadow, so our flower seed will help establish or restore other meadows. Look at the Plantlife website for more info.
  • Watch the sea as you walk on the farm - you could see an otter, or a bottle-nosed dolphin or even a basking shark. Look up and you could catch sight of the White Tailed Sea Eagle, or a Hen Harrier hunting over the Haunn field.
  • Enjoy a little 'Puffin Therapy' by taking a trip from Ulva Ferry with local tour operator 'Turus Mara' to the beautiful Treshnish Isles. Our guests are eligible for a discount on their trips!
  • Mull & Iona have a Food Trail now, to help visitors (and locals) source the wonderful island produce available - farm shops, producer's markets and eateries. You will find some tasters waiting for you when you arrive!
  • Our cottages sit under wonderful dark skies, with no light pollution. Watch out for shooting stars, the Milky Way and the Northern Lights!

Introducing

Carolyne Charrington

Carolyne and Somerset have run Treshnish Farm since 1994; Carolyne hails from Angus on the east coast of Scotland and Somerset from near London. They are passionate environmentalists - ask them how they managed to both reduce their carbon footprint and create such a lovely place to stay - and strive to enhance and protect the many different wildlife habitats on the farm. They enjoy being able to share their farm with their guests and are always happy to stop what they are doing to have a chat.
