The Experience

An excellent address between Mr Purves’ Light Emporium and Elaine’s Vintage Clothes, in bohemian trendy Stockbridge village. Behind the blue door of a classic Georgian terrace and up a couple of flights of stone steps, you’re met by a friendly housekeeper and brimming welcome basket. Unwind after a day’s exploring in the elegant sitting room where two large windows face the street (one way, with little traffic), the cream sofa and bright rugs are tasteful and inviting and the shutters can be closed and a gas fire lit for long evenings – the slick kitchen’s just off here too if you’re dining in. Both bedrooms overlook the quiet garden and are bright and fresh, with original artwork, good mattresses and linen; they share a white-tiled bathroom. Take to the cobbled streets that lead up through New Town teeming with bijou shops, independent booksellers and quirky cafés to pique your curiosity; the energetic can hire bikes or discover the Victorian baths a short stroll away. Comfortable enough for families, bohemian enough for art-lovers, or you might just spread out into Laura’s second apartment a couple of streets away.

Reviews

Sue, Warkworth, Norhtumberland

We were looking for a lovely place for a special stay in Edinburgh. St Stephen Street did not disappoint. The apartment is lovely above a lively street with really quiet bedrooms at the back. A nice big sitting room and a kitchen. Close to the centre with good bus connections to the places we wanted to visit. Lovely walks along the waters of Leith just round the corner. The apartment is surrounded by amazing places to eat and lovely shops. We would stay here again.

Sue, East Sussex

A lovely light and comfortable apartment in the village-like neighbourhood of Stockbridge. We were made to feel very welcome with fresh flowers and a selection of goodies on arrival. We loved the trendy St Stephens Street with its little cafes, delis, wine bars and individual shops, yet we were only a 10 - 15 minutes walk along cobbled streets to the Old Town and popular sights. A really cosy and quiet place to return to after a busy day exploring Edinburgh. Thank you Laura, we hope to return.

Anne, London

a lovely quiet apartment with a light and spacious living area, neatly equipped kitchen and very comfortable beds. In the Stockbridge area there are many choices of eating places, and a number of independent shops to buy local fresh produce to take home too. Edinburgh sights, shops and galleries etc are within very easy reach, and we mostly walked to these. Communication with hosts was very prompt, informative and welcoming with a lovely arrival pack of treats in the kitchen. Thank you for our stay, we do hope to return!

Janet, Glossop

Beautiful apartment, tastefully furnished and ideally situated for the village of Stockbridge as well as being within walking distance of the city. Owners were very helpful and accommodating and went out of their way to help . We lovd it.

Lauren, London

This beautiful apartment is in the most wonderful part of Edinburgh. We loved looking down onto the street which is lined with quirky shops, cocktail bars and gastro pubs. The apartment itself is stylish, light and very comfortable for a family of 4. We received a lovely welcome pack on arrival and would highly recommend it to our friends and family.

Location

The neighbourhood

Local points of interest from Laura Finlayson

  • Cosy up at a fireside table at the legendry old classic pub The Bailie for some of the best hearty pub fare! A stones throw from the apartment just at the end of St Stephen Street
  • Speciality shopping galore, use the wicker basket in the apartment and fill to the brim with artisan village produce such as speciality cheeses from Mellis's, deli produce at Herbies, wIne from Raeburn Fine Wines and tempting patisserie from Florentines
  • Amble by the river on this beautiful walk. Wander through the centuries passing St Bernards Well c1780 in 10 mins then on to historic Dean Village c1128 in only a few mins more. Truly enchanting whatever the time of year and take a camera too!
  • Princes' St (main city thoroughfare) on foot is 10-15 mins or hop on a bus, number 42 at the end of the street and be in the heart of the Old Town up near the castle in mins - or saunter up there at a more leisurely pace - its a lovely downhill walk home
  • Enjoy the sunset at Raeburn Hotel with its West facing balcony - get there early and book a table to dine outside or just enjoy a relaxing sundowner before dinner
  • Sunday market a must! End of street. Another must is to pack trunks and costumes, head to restored Glenogle Baths just 5 mins round in Saxe Coburg Place and of course the awsome Botanics! 10 mins away, wonderful cafe and glasshouse and always something on
