The Experience

Applecross is the Gaelic word for sanctuary and if you are in need of that, you’ll find it here. The views alone are enough to still your heart and let your spirit soar – the stunning Cuillin mountains on one side of you and the sea on the other. Step inside to a magical open-plan living room and kitchen with store cupboard basics plus a bottle of fizz, another of Applecross ale and good highland crackers.

Pack up a picnic and walk to a choice of beaches, stride hills and dales by rivers and lochs, sea kayak, fish or swim. There is wildlife everywhere, starting outside the cottage with wandering sheep, ducks, hens, geese and red deer. The Applecross Inn is two and a half miles, The Walled Garden restaurant another half mile – make sure you book.

Hunker down in a comfy sofa with the wood-burning stove doing its stuff, sleep under a beautiful canopy of branches, wake to birdsong, a sense of happiness and more sea views.

The Birdhouse is the perfect sanctuary for anyone wanting to experience the breathtaking landscapes and lochs of Wester Ross. Julie Baird who owns this small beautifully set up cottage is the perfect hostess - charming and extremely helpful. We had a fabulous week walking, exploring and eating in the superb Applecross Inn and a great restaurant called The Walled Garden. Mysterious, romantic, and as luck would have it, extraordinarily sunny! From the Birdhouse: Surely one of the world’s great views ‘over the sea to Skye’!

Julie was a perfect host from booking until we left her beautiful Birdhouse. She and Minnie met us on arrival, let us settle in and appeared (socially distant) for a lovely chat & she’s always on hand if any queries. The Birdhouse is stunning! Everything in this beautiful little home from home is of the highest quality, Julie has exceptional taste and it can be seen all around, from the comfiest bed, bedlinen, towels, toiletries, dishes....the list goes on and on....we literally could not fault anything. Visit The Birdhouse, you will come away rested and restored. Thank you Julie! Xxx

Julie and Minnie were the most welcoming of hosts to this idyllic highland getaway. The Birdhouse is beautifully proportioned inside, tastefully decorated and kitted out fully. The welcome pack was a thoughtful and welcome gift. The views from the property are astounding and the local walks varied and catered for all abilities. We were soothed and rejuvenated after our week of walking, absorbing the highland air and sea spray and laughing. In this wee part of heaven, we felt safe and secluded from the world, just what we needed.

The Birdhouse is a a very special place, which managed to sooth the nerves and nourish the soul. Firstly the property is beautifully and thoughtfully equipped and decorated, celebrating it’s name in style. Being a secret twitcher myself, I delighted in all the ornithological details. Julie and her dog Minnie are perfect hosts, there if you need them, but fully understanding of their guests need for space and time to just be. Finally the location is glorious, hard to reach, but worth the effort. I will treasure the views across to Skye and watching the seals play in the nearby bay - wonderful.

The Birdhouse is like something from a fairytale! It is aptly named, because most of the time the only sound you can hear is birdsong (with the occasional distant “meh” of a sheep). Utter peace and tranquility and stunning views of the Skye mountains from the living room window and the bench outside in the garden. The cottage is so comfortable, with lots of adorable quirky details, and equipped with everything you could possibly need - every detail has been thought of. Julie and her dog, Minnie, are charming hosts. We absolutely loved it and can’t wait to visit again.

The neighbourhood

The house sits in owner Julie's garden in the hamlet of Culduie with west-facing views over Skye and the Inner Sound. Apart from the wonderful pub in the village there is a good shop which will do holiday starter packs and deliver. You can also pre-order food from the House of Bruar and collect it packed in ice. Torrdian is 40 minutes in the car for more wonderful walks, a mighty loch and views.
