The Experience

Applecross is the Gaelic word for sanctuary and if you are in need of that, you’ll find it here. The views alone are enough to still your heart and let your spirit soar – the stunning Cuillin mountains on one side of you and the sea on the other. Step inside to a magical open-plan living room and kitchen with store cupboard basics plus a bottle of fizz, another of Applecross ale and good highland crackers.

Pack up a picnic and walk to a choice of beaches, stride hills and dales by rivers and lochs, sea kayak, fish or swim. There is wildlife everywhere, starting outside the cottage with wandering sheep, ducks, hens, geese and red deer. The Applecross Inn is two and a half miles, The Walled Garden restaurant another half mile – make sure you book.

Hunker down in a comfy sofa with the wood-burning stove doing its stuff, sleep under a beautiful canopy of branches, wake to birdsong, a sense of happiness and more sea views.

Reviews

They Might Be Giants sang about the 'Birdhouse in your Soul'. Not to put too fine a point on it this is how we felt about our stay at The Birdhouse. The place is truly wonderful, and the area likewise. The service online beforehand was exemplary. Val is to be commended, and followed up as promised. Deposit returned without hassle. The 'on site' help is friendly but unobtrusive. Although the weather in late August was not great, the log burner kept us warm and cosy. That is the Birdhouse in a nutshell. Whether you arrive via the pass or the coast road, you will find your nest.

What an amazing wee place to stay. Unique and very well equipped. Everything has been though of.

Lynn, Dunbar

Wonderfully stylish, cosy and private cottage. Super location, with one of the best beaches in Applecross within walking distance. Excellent hosts with an eye for detail.

The Birdhouse is really special - lots of reclaimed wood and thoughtful design touches but above all comfortable and welcoming. Everything you need on a self-catering break has been thought of and done well. It's just south of Applecross itself so there's much less of the North Coast 500 traffic which makes it peaceful but it's still easy to get to the Applecross Inn and Walled Garden, both of which serve great food. Lots of walks in the area - the walk to the coral beach is well worth the effort - and the scenery and views are stunning. The drive in over Bealach Na Ba is amazing!

Jon & Chris, Aberdour

Very stylish and quirky retreat for a romantic break. Everything was well presented, including a welcoming bottle of bubbles! Molly the dog appreciated the huge dog bowls and bag of treats. Lots of lovely walks around and good food at the Applecross Inn or Walled Garden at Applecross House. Excellent fish and chips from the food truck outside Applecross Inn

Gareth, Glengarriff

We had a lovely time at the Birdhouse on our honeymoon. The interior is absolutely beautiful and it is such a cozy wee hideaway. The people who run the place are lovely. There is lots to do in the surrounding area - beautiful walks and scenery, amazing wildlife and a great pub for food and drinks. We will definitely be back!

Location

The neighbourhood

The house sits in the owner's garden in the hamlet of Culduie with west-facing views over Skye and the Inner Sound. Apart from the wonderful pub in the village there is a good shop which will do holiday starter packs and deliver. You can also pre-order food from the House of Bruar and collect it packed in ice. Torrdian is 40 minutes in the car for more wonderful walks, a mighty loch and views.

Local points of interest from Val Woodhouse

  • Explore the Applecross Estate Walled Garden and eat in the gorgeous Walled Garden Restaurant - the food is divine and the atmosphere relaxing and peaceful.
  • Eat at the famous Applecross Inn. Fabulous range of seafood, excellent extensive menu. Bustling in summer and quieter and more snug in winter. Eat outside in summer at their Inside Out Fish 'n Chip Airstream, serving Ice-cream from Applecross Ices...Yum!
  • Applecross Heritage Centre is a haven for information on all the local history. Learn about the Monastic history and historical spots to visit in Applecross and the area. Lots of leaflets available. Great walking leaflet with lovely short and longer walks.
  • Bealach Na Ba / Pass of the Cattle - this is the famous route into Applecross. The Bealach is one of the highest mountain passes in Britain. Not for the faint hearted but stunning scenery at the top. This route forms part of the famous NC500.
  • Sands beach 4 miles along the coast road from the Applecross Inn. This beach is a well known very beautiful spot to walk, ponder, walk your dog or wild swim. Walk to and from Sand along the Sand path from behind Clachan Manse to build up an appetite!
  • Explore the numerous short and long walks weaving in and around Applecross Estate. Beautiful scenery, steeped in history. Find the quiet and attractive 'Lost Path' to wander along on amongst the leafy canopy of oak trees. Leaflets available for walks.
