The Experience

The castle has a colourful history that dates to 1190, and a bonus of staying here is you get a private tour. A couple of miles down the estate track, in an utterly tranquil position, is a historic hideaway of exceptional interest, a 14th-century defence tower, a bolthole for two with original features and every modern comfort. Enter the iron ‘yett’, wind up the narrow stone stair, and there is the well-equipped kitchen.

Up a wooden spiral stair to the sitting room, with its lovely open fire. Up again, to the romantic bedroom with a big sleigh bed under high rafters, and an open-plan bathroom and loo. High above the banks of the Tweed, the tower has small windows for green views to woods and down to river where brave souls can dip into the safe ‘swimming hole’ when the weather is kind.

It’s tempting to stay put but there’s plenty to do. After a day on the fairways, or fishing, raise a glass on your terrace for two.

We had a fantastic stay at Barns Tower in early January. Despite being very cold outside, the house warmed up well and was very cosy. It snowed, making it even more magical! We loved being so close to the River Tweed and enjoyed a walk to Neidpath Castle along the river path at dusk. The kitchen was well equipped and they had provided some essentials for us (milk, eggs, bread) which was much appreciated. Bed was comfy, the bath and shower were both nice. We didn't really want to leave the house but did venture out a little bit. It was pretty much a perfect stay!

Bianca

It was a birthday present for my husband and it was a great success. He was so happy about it and enjoyed every second. Hopefully we will come back one day!

Perfect location for a few days break. A historic building, restored with lot of respect and feel for details. It has everything you need for comfortable and pleasant stays. We also enjoyed in short walks around property and two hours walk down the river to Neidpath castle and Peebles.

Alma

Gorgeous. Enjoyed every minute of stay. Beautifully restored Tower. Absolutely would stay again. Great location … Peebles is a warm friendly town.

Location

The neighbourhood

The tower is set in idyllic countryside, just minutes away from Peebles, and only 40 minutes from Edinburgh by car. Nearby there are many ancient settlements and hill forts to explore, as well as the legendary Dawyck Gardens, and the historic Traquair House and brewery. The fascinating Border towns of Melrose, Hawick and and St. Boswells are also within easy reach. There's a luxury spa in Stobo.

Introducing

Lulu Benson

The castle and estate came into the family in 1810. Lulu (a picture framer for many years and one-time co-owner of a famous boho boutique in Edinburgh) now manages the castle as a wedding venue and a film location along with the tower as a holiday let. She has a large family who descend often, and two spaniels.
