The Experience
Staying in this historic building will be a treat. Built in 1870 and with a vast open-plan interior, there’s plenty of room to swing any number of cats in comfort and style. Cooks can chat happily from the well kitted-out kitchen to those relaxing by the wood-burner, there’s a super mezzanine library with hundreds of books and Netflix for escapees and a piano in the entrance hall for those who fancy a tinkle – it’s a happy place.
Charming Gethin and Carolynn live across the road and leave a welcome pack of seasonal local food. They can arrange a chef to cook for you if you want a special dinner, or tours of the Borders, a Land Rover safari, alpaca trekking and archery.
On sunny days you can sit in the pretty garden with views across the Ettrick valley – a tranquil spot. It’s a two-minute walk to shops and restaurants, cycling and hill walking in the Southern Uplands will be sublime and you can fish or play golf nearby. The coast and Edinburgh are within striking distance.

Staying in Five Turrets is like reliving history in a very modern way, the contrast of historical exterior and modern interior is outstanding, a moment you are looking at this brilliant old Coach house and next moment you are inside in this super modern kitchen with all possible amenities. Every room is special, every window has the most amazing view and every corner of the house would make you want to stay here longer. Scotland in itself is such a beautiful country and if you get to experience the beauty with the comfort of such lovely house what more can you ask for.

A beautiful place brimming with character! It was the ideal place for our friends reunion, with the wonderfully spacious kitchen/living/dining area. Great location too, with restaurants a short walk and plenty to explore nearby!

The house exceeded our expectations. The design of the house is just stunning and the owners have thought of everything- from a lovely woodburning stove, complete with all the logs to a library filled with books, to immaculate bathrooms and a kitchen- fitted with all the best appliances. We were very lucky with the weather and so were able to sit out the whole weekend in the sun in the lovely garden. Thank you so much for having us and no doubt we will be back very soon.

Location
The neighbourhood
Five Turrets is on the edge of Selkirk, where Sir Walter Scott served as sheriff for 33 years – you can visit his former courtroom, now a museum, as well as the oldest building in the town, Halliwell’s House Museum. There are plenty of walks ranging from gentle to strenuous – ask your hosts for more information.
Local points of interest from Gethin Chamberlain
- This is the home of the notorious Border Reivers, bloodthirsty brigands who terrorised the border lands for centuries. The dramatic fortified pele towers built to keep them at bay dot the landscape and many are open to visitors. Very Instagrammable too.
- It's a great place to see ospreys and golden eagles. We work with local experts to offer wildlife safaris and we know where to find those elusive red squirrels too. Or head over to the coast and you can dive with seals or take a boat trip to see dolphins.
- Prefer your wildlife on a plate? There's salmon, trout and grayling fishing nearby on the world famous River Tweed and the Ettrick Water. We work with a hugely experienced fisherman to provide access to the best beats. There's loch fishing too.
- We've got some of the best hillwalking in Scotland and provide detailed routes from the doorstep. Try The Three Brethren for fabulous views. For cyclists, there's world-class mountain biking on the 7 Stanes trails at Peebles, Innerleithen and Newcastleton.
- The local food and drink is superb. Visit the new Borders Distillery visitor centre in Hawick or enjoy a gin tasting session in the house with Selkirk Distillers. For a real treat, book a personal chef to prepare a special tasting menu in your own kitchen.
- You'll find many more suggestions for things to do on our own website, all pinned to a detailed Google map to help you plan your visit. Let us know if you want advice or a tailored itinerary - we'll do our very best to help. www.fiveturrets.com/explore

Introducing
Gethin Chamberlain
Gethin and Carolynn spent six years in India before settling in Selkirk with their son Ieuan. They bought the property and renovated it to run as a family business to support Gethin's work as a human rights photojournalist and Carolynn's endeavours to turn her passion for weaving into a business. You'll find examples of Carolynn's beautiful work throughout the property, while some of Gethin's pictures decorate the walls. They want their guests to get the most out of their stay so are working with local businesses to provide the widest range of experiences possible.
A long weekend in Selkirk was made magical by a stay at The Five Turrets. The other reviews capture the building perfectly, but to repeat, the rooms are well apportioned with fantastic furniture and plenty of plates, cups, glasses and utensils to complete the stay. We arrange for a chef to come to the house and cook for us. A perfect meal which started off the weekend in the best way. We also arranged a visit to a local gin distillery. Both recommended by the owners. Thoroughly recommended.
