The Experience

The Longhouse is architect-designed with not another building to disturb the stunning views across grass rushes to the sea. In summer you’ll be strolling the raised boardwalk or eating on the dining deck. This serene, Scandi-style house has a really well-stocked kitchen with lots of cookery books and sharp knives for proper cooks. You’ll find local treats waiting too.

Bedrooms, bathrooms (one facing south) and living spaces seamlessly spread themselves out, with the kitchen on the same level and a super second sitting room upstairs for escapees with computer and WiFi for those who must work. Glass doors glide open to a wraparound deck, perfect for a sundowner at dusk or a barbecue on a warm night – buy fresh shellfish straight from the boats.

Bedrooms have fabulous touches – modern chandeliers, Harris tweed throws and cushions, huge picture windows. Sip tea in bed, admire the views, feel lucky to be here.

Reviews

Karen

We had a lovely stay at Lewis Longhouse. It's situated just a few miles north of Stornoway, which we found quite convenient. The house is extremely well equipped and the decor is stunning. Eilidh met us when we arrived, and explained all the nuances of the property. Linda provided a guide with suggestions for places to visit. We took this to heart and managed to visit quite a few of her recommendations. I would recommend a visit to Coll pottery, only a couple of minutes drive from the Longhouse. It's a bit Tardis like! Some beautiful pieces. The welcome pack! One of the best we have ever had!

Stuart

The detail and timing of information prior to our arrival was excellent - both thorough and useful. The suggestions for daily activities was handy and up to date, the only problem is a week is not long enough to do them all. We stayed there just before Easter. One advantage of this meant the roads were free of mobile homes, caravans and motor cycles - don't get me wrong, I'm a biker myself, but it was good to be able to dawdle along at 40mph and enjoy the spectacular views.

Mike, Larkhall

Beautiful house, inside and out, in attractive location. Fine view of and easy walk to local beach. High quality furnishings. Very well-equipped kitchen plus wifi, TV, music player, books etc. Useful guides provided for the house and the island. Helpful local staff should you need them. Couldn't fault it!

Clara, Saffron Walden

We had the most dreamy holiday in the Lewis Longhouse. The house was absolutely stunning. Spotlessly clean and beautifully finished. We really couldn’t fault anything. Others before us have said that it was the perfect base to explore the island, but once immersed in such a fabulous home, it’s hard to leave. All creature comforts aside, it is a wonderful island with lots to do and some fabulous places to eat.

Steve, Huddersfield

“We found ourselves of an evening sat wine in hand looking out of the window across the grasslands to the bay; having just cooked and eaten another great meal out of one of the Longhouse recipe books - using local fish. We absolutely loved it at the Long House !! Linda and Paul have built a special place and we felt privileged to have shared it. Thank you.”

Location

The neighbourhood

You're on the edge of a small hamlet, Back, with a little shop and post office, petrol station and cake shop. Stornoway is a 15 minute drive (you can catch the bus outside the house) for a pretty harbour, boat trips, nice independent shops and a good butcher. You may spot shoals of dolphin and some very tame seals. Visit the Callanish Stones which you can get close to and touch - magical.

Local points of interest from Linda Macleod Brown

  • Follow our inside track for days out; published annually for our guests to help you plan your holiday; full of our suggestions for every day of the week to make the most of your stay.
  • 5 minutes walk to our local beach, visible from the deck. The house is central enough for great day-trips all around the island.
  • Buy fresh langoustines, crab or lobster from a local fisherman, cheeses, venison and home bakes through the island's delis or honesty boxes and enjoy a picnic by one of the many beaches.
  • Look out for the Northern Lights, the aurora borealis on a crisp, clear night or just take in the vast dark sky lit up with stars and a clear Milky Way! Sit on the deck, daytime, under big skies and look out for wildlife from corncrakes to deer.
  • We're in a quiet, edge of village location with open beach views, 5 minutes walk away, but on the bus route, handy for an evening out. EV charger at the house.
  • Enjoy the roadtrip through Scotland and sea crossing to the islands, as part of your holiday, looking out for dolphins and porpoises on the way!

Introducing

Linda Macleod Brown

Linda is a local lass, born in Stornoway. She and her husband Paul had the house built on the family croft and they come as often as they can to enjoy their island home. They wanted to build something that was the best home they could have for themselves. Linda is a passionate cook (hence the thoughtful kitchen) and leaves you lots of guide books and maps so you can get the very best out of your stay.
