The Experience
The Longhouse is architect-designed with not another building to disturb the stunning views across grass rushes to the sea. In summer you’ll be strolling the raised boardwalk or eating on the dining deck. This serene, Scandi-style house has a really well-stocked kitchen with lots of cookery books and sharp knives for proper cooks. You’ll find local treats waiting too.
Bedrooms, bathrooms (one facing south) and living spaces seamlessly spread themselves out, with the kitchen on the same level and a super second sitting room upstairs for escapees with computer and WiFi for those who must work. Glass doors glide open to a wraparound deck, perfect for a sundowner at dusk or a barbecue on a warm night – buy fresh shellfish straight from the boats.
Bedrooms have fabulous touches – modern chandeliers, Harris tweed throws and cushions, huge picture windows. Sip tea in bed, admire the views, feel lucky to be here.

We had the most dreamy holiday in the Lewis Longhouse. The house was absolutely stunning. Spotlessly clean and beautifully finished. We really couldn’t fault anything. Others before us have said that it was the perfect base to explore the island, but once immersed in such a fabulous home, it’s hard to leave. All creature comforts aside, it is a wonderful island with lots to do and some fabulous places to eat.

“We found ourselves of an evening sat wine in hand looking out of the window across the grasslands to the bay; having just cooked and eaten another great meal out of one of the Longhouse recipe books - using local fish. We absolutely loved it at the Long House !! Linda and Paul have built a special place and we felt privileged to have shared it. Thank you.”

A perfect place to unwind. The weather was wild but we needed to chill and relax after a very busy work period. It is the perfect house for this. The house was warm, easy to use, cosy and comfy; everything we needed was there for cooking. It was impeccably clean. Thoughtful touches like a lovely DVD collection and a good supply of cleaning equipment were helpful. The travel guides and maps were a real gift. The house is in a quiet settlement about 7 miles from Stornoway, within easy access of supplies; commands beautiful views over moors and bay, and is a short walk to the beach.

The Longhouse is nothing short of heavenly. It provides every comfort whilst delighting the eye in every way, whether it be the beautiful decor and artwork or (and totally a wow factor) the sensational views from all the beautifully placed windows. It was a pure delight just to sit in one of the glorious seating areas and watch the light change out of the windows. As a family of four, with two teenagers, it provided a fantastic base to explore the achingly beautiful Hebrides. Unforgettable!

This house is among the best of all self catering houses we have ever stayed in. Every last detail has been considered by the owner to truly make this an outstanding holiday home. It is located 10-15 minutes from Stornoway making access to the capital of the Outer Hebrides really easy, whilst being in a location where the views are amazing and access to the glorious beaches are within a very short walk. We enjoyed a wonderful week staying in this house. The weather was very kind to us but I really do think that I couldn’t think of a nicer home to spend a week, even if the weather was lousy!

Really, it’s very difficult to find fault with The Longhouse. From the initial booking, until the end of the holiday, it was first class all the way. Communication was friendly and yet efficient and it’s a pleasure to deal with the owner directly. You are met at The Longhouse by the most helpful and friendly local caretaker who provided any information needed. The Longhouse is spotlessly clean, warm and excellently appointed. Information about the house, local facilities and about the island generally is provided. In summary, The Longhouse is a first class experience all round!

The property is even better than it looks in the pictures. It is beautifully designed, very nicely furnished and well equipped. Our teenagers loved the chill out mezzanine area. The housekeeper met us on arrival, showed us round, and made us feel very welcome. There were nice touches such as a welcome grocery pack of local produce and the owner’s printed booklet on days out in Lewis. The house was very clean and well maintained. The location is good and the views are amazing. We had some lovely days out but always looked forward to returning to the Longhouse.

Probably the best self catering property I have ever stayed in! Very spacious with lovely open plan living area. Everything oozed quality. Local Harris tweed furnishings, incredibly well equipped, lots of basic store cupboard provisions, like someone's home rather than just a holiday house. Uninterrupted views across Coll Bay. Location is very practical for exploring the island. On a bus route and you can walk down onto the beach where we saw pilot whales. In summary, a fantastic stylish and spacious house in a great location on a stunning island. Expensive but you get what you pay for!

“From the moment we were greeted at the door by smiling Anne (the 'housekeeper"), we knew we were in for a treat. Thoughtfully planned, brilliantly constructed, and thoroughly equipped, Lewis Longhouse ranks as one of our all-time favorite self-catering cottages based on the ten years we've been summering in the UK. Linda and Paul have anticipated every possible need and desire, providing copious instructions, books and suggestions for exploring Lewis and Harris and digging beneath the surface to experience some of the Outer Hebrides reality. Result was a magical two weeks. Hated to leave.

A cosy paradise and excellent base for exploring both Lewis and Harris. The greatest characteristic of our stay was the attention to detail provided by Linda. Her desire to make everything perfect was palpable from the pre arrival care through to the welcome bag. The Longhouse itself works hard to make the dramatic skies and ferocity of the weather a brilliant extension of the experience. I've rarely felt more delightfully snug as when the wind blasted the landscape outside. Do make time to meet Linda 2 from the Hebridean Soap Company and take binoculars for seal spotting. Completely magical.

Location
The neighbourhood
You're on the edge of a small hamlet, Back, with a little shop and post office, petrol station and cake shop. Stornoway is a 15 minute drive (you can catch the bus outside the house) for a pretty harbour, boat trips, nice independent shops and a good butcher. You may spot shoals of dolphin and some very tame seals. Visit the Callanish Stones which you can get close to and touch - magical.
Local points of interest from Linda Macleod Brown
- Fly here in less than an hour from Edinburgh, Inverness or Glasgow! .. or take a few more hours and enjoy the roadtrip and sea crossing to a different world!
- Great walks on the doorstep, along our local beach 50 yards east or west to moorland, whatever the weather. And central enough for great day-trips all around the island. Or just sit on the deck and watch the birdlife and big skies to track that weather!
- Follow the Eat Drink Hebrides Trail, buy fresh langoustines, crab or lobster from a local fisherman, cheeses and local venison through the islands and sample your wares in the house for dinner.
- Look out for the Northern Lights, the aurora borealis, step outside on a crisp, clear night and take in the vast dark sky lit up with stars and a clear Milky Way!
- We provide guests with our own inside track for days out to help you plan your holiday with suggestions for every day for a week or more so you get the most out of your time at our Lewis Longhouse.
- In a quiet, edge of village location with open beach views, we are accessible by the local bus, handy for an evening out. EV charger at the house metered for guests with electric cars.

Introducing
Linda Macleod Brown
Linda is a local lass, born in Stornoway. She and her husband Paul had the house built on the family croft and they come as often as they can to enjoy their island home. They wanted to build something that was the best home they could have for themselves. Linda is a passionate cook (hence the thoughtful kitchen) and leaves you lots of guide books and maps so you can get the very best out of your stay.
Probably the best holiday home we’ve ever stayed in. We so much enjoyed our stay at the Lewis Longhouse. The house has a quality which we felt as soon as we arrived. It’s not one particular thing. It’s a combination of the light filled rooms, the big views whether calm or wild, the sound of silence, the warmth of the floors, the books and the maps, the comfy chairs and the space to stretch out or snuggle in.”
