The Experience
There is much peace in the hamlet with swans and the occasional kayak (bring your own!) gliding past on the water, sometimes fishermen on the bank and many mature trees for reflected autumn colours. Inside is not just a place to stay, it’s a living art gallery – the resident artist’s wonderful canvasses light up the walls – an ever-changing display as they are sold and replaced.
You’re completely secluded in your courtyard garden: sunbathe on loungers, fire up the barbecue, jump in the hot tub after a long walk, revel in the peace. The kitchen has oodles of kit so bring back your market finds and cook up a storm – you’re left a bottle of local wine to get you started and lots of useful basics in the cupboards.
Up the wooden stairs to a mezzanine bedroom, spacious and airy with views down to the river and a separate walk-in shower. The courtyard catches the afternoon sun so it’s a good spot for late, lazy lunches.

Location
The neighbourhood
The walking is sublime, with many options, from quiet strolls to challenging hikes. If you like wandering around food markets then you'll be very happy - try Sainte-Foy-la-Grande (one of the biggest in France) for foie gras, truffles, duck and local cheeses. Pessac-sur-Dordogne is 2kms away for a good restaurant, Le Pessaquai, a twenty-minute walk. Saint-Émilion is half an hour and Bordeaux one hour.
Local points of interest from Kit Bentley
- Daily bustling markets brimming with local produce, foie gras, truffles, duck and local cheeses. Visit the markets at Castillon La Bataille. Eymet night market, Issigeac, Santa Foy La Grande, one of the largest in France
- Famous international artist lives next door. Private art courses available. Visit his studio and on-site gallery for that rare art experience. Art historian Elie Faure lived next door. The house is filled with original artwork.
- Wine lovers paradise. St Seurin de prats is close to Bergerac, Montbazillac and St Emilion, the world UNESCO heritage site amid the land of 1001 castles and fairy-tale flower meadows are a bevy of medieval towns and villages. Private wine tours available
- Captivate life on the river. Glowing sunrises and sunsets. Fishing and wild swimming available from the foot of the private steps leading to the Dordogne. Kayaks and canoes available for hire in Pessac 1km
- Famed for its gastronomy, you can feast like a king without leaving the property. Gastronomic delights await you. There are 3 local restaurants in Pessac, 1 km. Michelin star restaurant in St Emilion and Bordeaux
- Wildlife takes central stage with swans cutting through the river and fish pirouetting from its tranquil waters. Lone fishermen drift silently past. This is a wonderful place to just be. Now that’s hard to find!

Introducing
Kit Bentley
Kit also lives in the hamlet and will come to meet you when you arrive. She's happy to advise on sightseeing and wine tours, and also runs art and wine courses.
We had a wonderful holiday at Shambala with the most charming hosts in the world - Kit and Eric. You can really relax here, right on the Dordogne and in great nature. We didn't want to go home anymore, surrounded by art and tasteful furnishings. Fantastic!
