The Experience
Relax on the patio enclosed by high hedges and shaded by trees. You can bask by the pool, lunch on the terrace and have a barbecue in the evening with provisions from the good local boucherie. You stay in the gîte adjacent to the 19th-century coach-house, made of traditional stone.
Inside feels warm, convivial and cosy – an open-plan design for plenty of space and with huge rustic beams overhead. Take a tour of Vanessa’s wonderful vintage fashion collection in the little museum; stroll down to the village and its lovely square for shops, a bar, boulangerie and a good brasserie.
This is the northern reach of the Dordogne, the aptly named Perigord Vert, with a verdant landscape of forests, valleys and hills. Stock up at Piégut-Pluviers market (26km), discover prehistoric cave paintings at the Grotte de Villars (19km) and visit the Château de Jumilhac and its gardens (18km), topped with turrets and towers.

Location
The neighbourhood
You're in the Perigord National Park so numerous châteaux are within easy reach. Drive to Château de Puyguilhem in 25 minutes, or Bourdeilles and Hautefort in under an hour. Closer to home stroll to the man-made lake in Mialet, or hike, cycle, canoe, fish and play golf nearby. Foodies can head for the local brewery and honey producer or the Foie Gras and Truffle Museum (20 minutes). Perigordian cuisine is gorgeous and there are many restaurants within a short drive (some with Michelin stars). Explore pretty villages St Jean de Cole (20km) and Brantome, or Périgueux and Limoges are under an hour's drive. The train station is a ten-minute drive.
Local points of interest from Vanessa Jane Howard
- The Barrage de Mialet reservoir offers a peaceful 9km circular trail through ancient woodland and past a bird sanctuary. Largely tree-shaded, it's a wonderfully cool escape on hot days, perfect for walking, lingering and picnicking along the water's edge
- Les Voyageurs, our local hotel restaurant just 10 minutes away, serves classic Périgordian cuisine and is a firm guest favourite. William is happy to drop you off there and pick you up, so you can both enjoy a glass or two without worrying about the drive
- Brantôme is unmissable. Wander past a medieval abbey on an island, explore a château and gardens, discover the open-air cave museum and end the day at the Michelin-starred Moulin de l'Abbaye. Known as the Venice of the Périgord, it's a photographer's dream
- The North Dordogne is a treasure hunter's paradise. From antique fairs, brocantes and car boot sales to factory outlets for leather and porcelain, there is always something to discover throughout the season. Your hosts, vintage fiends, know the best ones
- From village night markets with communal tables, local food and live music, to five Michelin-starred restaurants within an hour's drive, the Périgord takes food seriously. Black truffles, foie gras, Limousin beef and chestnuts — it's a food lover's delight
- This region rewards every kind of explorer: the haunting WW2 village of Oradour-sur-Glane, the unique pedal-powered Vélorail, lunch in Saint-Jean-de-Côle, one of France's most beautiful villages, and candlelit visits to the fairytale Château de Jumilhac

Introducing
Vanessa Jane Howard
In the main house live a delightful pair: William, a Scot, and English Vanessa. William, who was in the Royal Navy in the 1980s, is a keen amateur historian and could discuss Napoleon for hours; Vanessa loves fashion and worked in marketing. They are really knowledgeable about the area so ask them for recommendations - they'll even make bookings for you.
Thank you so much for a truly wonderful week in your beautiful home - so relaxing and everything we could have needed!
