The Experience
Drive up the winding lane and you can almost feel the centuries drop away. Beyond is a house that might have been conjured for a film: ochre walls, a beautiful stone roof, dark wooden staircases, ancient fireplaces and rooms filled with furniture collected over the family’s sixty years here.
Come together in the big kitchen, built around an island that can host a party. Take a book from the library, play cards by the fire, or enjoy your morning coffee beneath the enormous linden tree outside. Eight bedrooms are spread across two wings, each with its own character. The principal has a four-poster bed and a green-tiled bathroom, while up a narrow spiral staircase, two attic rooms are like stepping into a dollhouse.
The house meanders around courtyards and terraces, with cobbled pathways and corners appearing as you go. Outside, an old chicken coop has been reimagined as a pool house (with a plancha to cook on) beside the heated pool.

We think you'll love
- The sense of history in the walls: old stone, inherited furniture and a house that feels genuinely unchanged
- All the space, with quiet corners to read and room enough for the whole group to gather, even bedrooms with their own sitting areas
- Exploring the Périgord Noir's history and countryside, then coming home to a proper family house
You should know
- There are stairs throughout, plus cobbled courtyards that can be slippery underfoot (children will need supervising)
- The furnishings are personal and characterful rather than luxurious, as you’d expect in a family home
- There's no heating - but fireplaces in the sitting room and kitchen, a wood-burner in the dining room and heated mattress covers on some of the beds

Location
The neighbourhood
You're perched above rolling Périgord hills, with sweeping views and distant farmhouses for neighbours. Thonac (2km) has a 12th-century church, a grocer and two restaurants: Michelin-selected Le Boïdicou and the more casual L'Archambau. Château de Losse, the Vézère river and the caves at Montignac-Lascaux (8km) are all close by; Sarlat-la-Canéda (22km) is the nearest town.
