The Experience

Unless you’re a total minimalist you’ll feel happy the minute you open the rose-framed front door: there are books and games, antiques, deep armchairs, lovely artworks and a cosy wood-burner for chilly evenings. A simple kitchen has all you need for holiday cooking (with a barbecue outside too) and a welcome pack of basics, plus a bottle of local wine awaits.

Your own gravelled courtyard is shaded by the Linden tree (Le Tilleul) but catches the morning sun – lovely to have a leisurely breakfast or a cup of tea here after a swim. The 10-metre pool is shared occasionally with the owners but still feels very private. You’re welcome to wander out of your French windows to the west-facing rear garden; a peaceful spot with only birdsong to disturb.

Walk along trails through magnificent woodland directly from the cottage, hire bikes, join the Vézelay to Compostela Pilgrims’ Way, sample truffles and foie gras from the local markets along with some glorious wines, feel very French.

Reviews

My partner Jane and I enjoyed an absolutely wonderful two-week holiday at Le Tilleuil and enjoyed every moment. The property is delightful and cosy and the swimming pool is the perfect place just to take time out and relax. The local area with its ancient villages, open markets, chateaus, caves, rivers and bustling towns gave us plenty to explore. And driving on clear well-maintained roads was a joy. James and Sheena were the perfect hosts in every way and we very much enjoyed their company while we were there. We certainly hope to return.

Gorgeous cottage in the most peaceful setting. Sheena & James are warm and thoughtful hosts. We had the benefit of staying 2 weeks and we loved it. Beautiful towns and villages, lovely cycle routes and walks. There is much to see and do in the area and the cottage was just lovely to come back to with the benefit of the pool and the garden to watch the birds. Thankyou Sheena & James for sharing it with us.

We really enjoyed our week's stay. The gite is lovely - cosy and well equipped. The courtyard is just perfect for dining at any time of the day. The tranquility of the location is beyond compare and so relaxation comes easily. The swimming pool is without doubt the best we have come across in rented accommodation in France - immaculately clean and perfectly maintained. James and Sheena were the perfect hosts. We can thoroughly recommend Le Tilleul. And be sure to eat in the Comptoir des Halles down the road in Sorges - a gem.

Frank and Trish, Dublin

One of the best Gites we have had the pleasure to stay in and definitely the best swimming pool. James and Sheena were helpful and welcoming hosts as previous visitors have said , especially with car parking tips for our visit to Brantome and for other days out. We spent two weeks relaxing, exploring, swimming and eating our breakfast each day in our own little courtyard. Highly recommended.

Sue, Chichester

Beautiful, peaceful forest setting surrounded by a timeless landscape and wealth of ancient architecture, set off by the warmth and hospitality of the hosts James and Sheena.

Alex

Sheena and James are very welcoming and were very helpful with local information. I especially appreciated that they had made up an extra bed on the floor because of my dodgy back. The gite is delightful. In the silence of France profonde and with the glorious weather it was wonderful for us to spend the time together sitting in the garden or idling by the pool. The pool is a huge blessing! We had hot days but at night the temperature dropped and we were glad to have the log burner lit-a lovely feature in the sitting room. It was a lovely week and we really enjoyed the area.

Le Tilleul is the most beautiful and peaceful place my husband and I have ever stayed at . James and Sheena are the perfect hosts and couldn’t do enough for us . The cottage had everything and more , for a cosy stay . We will be back . Caroline and Ray . We feel so refreshed thanks to James and Sheena 🙂😘

Le Tilleul is the perfect property for a stay in this delightful area of France. The gite is tastefully decorated and equipped with everything to make your stay as comfortable and relaxing as possible. James and Sheena are the perfect hosts: warm and welcoming. The pool is simply stunning - one of the best we've enjoyed in 20 years of holidaying in France. The gite is truly wonderful and we would highly recommend staying here - you will not be disappointed!

A delightful place to stay. As soon as you enquire, you discover that Sheena & James are excellent hosts. Communication is excellent, the booking process straightforward. Pre-arrival information tells you all you need (including fail-safe directions). The warm welcome and charm throughout your visit makes you feel right at home. With hosts like this the accommodation is lovely. The cottage is pretty and charming, cosy but also cool in the heat. The gardens are a delight and the pool is a wonderful spot for a swim or to laze in the sun with a book and a drink. Go! - you'll love it.

We had a delightful time at Le Tilleul. James and Sheena were most attentive and helpful hosts and we were very much at home from the first evening. Supper under the Linden tree was a daily occurrence, as was swimming in the lovely pool. We also ate extremely well locally in St Jean de Cole. Each day was rounded off with a stroll down lanes serenaded by cuckoos and golden orioles. We would love to return.

Liz and Chris, Norwich

A home from home! We both agreed on our second evening, staying with James and Sheena truly felt like staying with some old family friends. From our initial enquiry on Sawday's to the moment we left, we were so well looked after - neither of us wanted to leave! James gave us all his best local knowledge. Not only did we arrive to the most gorgeous place, but we were also greeted by the most delicious lasagne made by Sheena and a perfectly stocked fridge. Lovely walking routes, a heavenly pool, delicious local wine, the perfect place to unwind!

Izzy, London

We thoroughly enjoyed our week in this comfortable and peaceful gite. Sheena and James were most accommodating to our needs and we really appreciated their thoughtfulness in stocking our fridge, the loan of ironing apparatus and the availability of the pool. We had most of our meals under an immense linden tree(Le Tilleul) in our courtyard and depending on the time of day enjoyed the accompaniment of birdsong. We followed our hosts suggestions and explored several villages and towns through parts of the Perigord, wetting our appetites for a return visit!

Michael, Salt Spring Island Canada

We had a restful and tranquil stay in this comfortable and well equipped house. James and Sheena are welcoming and friendly hosts but we also had our own privacy. It’s such a pretty area with plenty to do and see and it was lovely to come back after a morning out and be able to swim and relax and eat in the garden.

Kate, London

Our stay was absolutely marvellous ! James and Sheena are not only thoughtful and caring : You enter as a guest, and leave as a friend ! The cottage has everything one needs, has a decoration of good taste and is indeed very quiet. We enjoyed the great pool, the surroundings and the area. Conclusion : We'll come back ! Ulrik & Mimi

Ulrik, Dilbeek

A perfect bolthole for two in the Périgord countryside. James and Sheena are thoughtful and caring hosts, and they have clearly put a lot of thought into furnishing and decorating this little gem.

Location

The neighbourhood

You're in a tiny hamlet, secluded but not utterly remote. Two small towns are just five minutes away by car, with a post office, pharmacy, good bakery and supermarket. Sorges (3.5 km) is home to Auberge de la Truffe, a fine dining restaurant known for local specialities. Thiviers (12km) has cafés and a super Saturday market. Brantôme, known as ‘The Venice of the Dordogne’, is 30 minutes by car.

Local points of interest from James & Sheena Willis

  • 'Périgord Vert' is the lushest region of the Dordogne- and the least crowded! Visit the châteaux of Puyguilhem, Bourdeilles and Jumilhac-le-Grand, and the amazing, pre-historic wall paintings of the Grotte de Villars. Beautiful countryside, empty roads!
  • A little further afield, visit the spiralling towns of Aubeterre and Uzerche, the châteaux of Hautefort and Coussac-Bonneval; the hill-top plateau of Mont Gargan, a lovely walk with stunning panoramic views, and the château and National Stud at Pompadour.
  • Pretty St Jean de Côle, with fine Romanesque church and château, is nearby. Enchanting Brantôme (the ‘Venice of the Dordogne’, straddling the River Dronne), with its ancient abbey, range of restaurants, antique shops and galleries, is 30 minutes' drive.
  • Sorges, our local town, is the truffle centre of the region. During the winter season there is a Sunday market dedicated solely to the noble tuber– bargain with the sellers! There is even a truffle museum. A local farm offers tours and tastings.
  • Foie Gras is the other local speciality; again, the local farm offers visits, as well as sales. The geese range unfenced, kept honest by the owners' sheepdogs. Buy for immediate consumption, or 'sous vide' to take home. Add a glass or two of Montbazillac!
  • We are lucky to have an excellent restaurant, 'Auberge de la Truffe, close by. Perigueux (25km) offers a wide range of eateries, as well as being a lovely town– winding mediaeval alleys, hidden squares, markets, museum. And great shopping!

James & Sheena Willis

James (a photographer) and Sheena (a fashion designer) are separated from you by a barn. They are affable and fuss-free hosts, happy to deliver a continental breakfast, give you a lift to a walking route, share their garden and pool and generally be around if you need them. Otherwise they'll leave you to your own devices. You’ll see their friendly English setters loafing about.
