The Experience

Splash in the pool, bask on the terraces, play ping-pong, croquet and boules. This enchanting building with its 14th-century tower (once a soldier outpost) is a house of wobbly roofs, characterful floorboards, and mellow stone, rose-rambled walls.

You can take the whole West Wing for up to ten, made up of the apartment, Bel Etage and the studio, and/or the South Wing for four. All come with patios or terraces; and the South Wing’s, separated by a grassy courtyard, is the most secluded. Gather round a barbecue, cook in a chef-happy kitchen. You can harvest nuts, fruits and ceps in season, and stock up in St Astier’s market (10km), or Riberac’s more famous one (20km).

For brocante, head for Verteillac, 28km; its market is the first Sunday of the month. Wonderful watery Brantôme, ‘Venice of Périgord’, is a half-hour drive, while the Grotte de Villars, whose cave paintings are originals not replicas, is remarkable.

Reviews

We loved our stay in the Apartment and highly recommend Manoir de Monce for those looking for a true Dordogne experience. A designer has decorated all the spaces and they are truly beautiful. In addition, she is a great cook so has ensured the kitchens have everything you need to bring home bounty from the local markets and cook up a feast. All the appliances are top quality and in good working order. The pool is lovely, the gardens are lovely and the owners are even more lovely! Thank you Andrea and Wolfgang for the privilege of sharing your slice of heaven! Merci/Danke

Karen, Lyon

A beautifully rural location with views that stretch for miles, this is a proper 'chateau' experience with huge thick walls, big fireplaces, slab flooring, big steps and a wonderful quirky turret room for sleeping in. But we loved that it also has a very good, fully equipped kitchen, modern bathrooms and well-functioning central heating throughout (it was March after all). The owners are friendly and responsive and left us a delicious quiche for our arrival. Riberac is the most useful local town - about 15 minutes drive away. All in all, a lovely stay, even in winter.

Raymond, Carmarthen

What a peaceful place to relax and recharge. Throughout Manoir de Moncé, everything is big, spacious, airy and decorated in muted pastels, the bathrooms were a very high standard, newly renovated, light and bright too. I loved the feature walls, with the stencil motifs that popped up linking them all together. There are vast views with nothing to hear but the sounds of the countryside. I felt myself drawn to look outside and over the fields whilst I was there.

Fabulous hosts and a wonderful relaxing rural location. We shared the property with two other couples that had children of a similar age. Our host made us feel incredibly welcome as soon as we arrived. Welcome drinks on the first night was a great touch and a good way to get to know the other guests. The property is absolutely stunning and decorated to a high standard. It was a wonderful holiday.

We had the most relaxing and peaceful stay at Monce. It is a very special and secluded place to unwind. The apartment was beautifully furnished and very well equipped. The pool area is lovely and the pool is a great size, although quite cold in October! We will definitely be back!

Location

The neighbourhood

Enjoy huge views, long lawns and big skies on this historic 34-hectare estate. Swim, play, wander the grounds, and make friends with a donkey and horse. Friendly neighbour Mme Huguette, happy to speak French, has home produce to sell, and there’s a lovely Thursday market in St Astier (a few restaurants too). Find walnuts, chestnuts and ceps in the woods, and enjoy the birdlife and butterflies in spring.

Local points of interest from Nikolaus von Grundherr

  • Culinary: Don’t miss the local markets, they are a treasure of great products and atmosphere. You are welcome to search for ceps in the oak woods of Moncé, collect wallnuts and sweet chestnuts (Marons) as well as harvest ripe fruits and grapes in the garden
  • Nature: Donkey Valentine, Horse Felicia, our four legged guests graze in the southern part of the gardens and love to be fed on carrots. Birdlovers experience an amazing natural spectacle in spring/early summer. Stars: Starwatchers will stay up all night
  • Culture: From end of June until beginning of September every Friday Open-Air Blues and Culture Jazzevenings in the nearby village of Douchapt. Dancing after sunset - very french ! Visit the Brocante Markets especially Verteillac - first Sunday each month.
  • Excursions/Attractions: Less noted than newly opened Lascaux 4 but almost as impressive (and very near) are the Grotte de Villars near Brantome. Once on your way to Brantome we strongly recommend to visit the Castles of Bourdeilles and Puyguilhem.
  • Outstanding: An impressive jewel is the beautiful village of Aubeterre s. Dronne with the Rock Church St.Jean from 8th century being the largest monolithic church in Europe; do not miss Saint-Jean-de-Côle rated as one of the prettiest villages in France.
  • Farming: Our tenant grows organic crops on the land of Moncé - no pesticides nor artificial fertilizers are used. You are staying in an ecological intact environment and will see animals, insects and plants which you might not have seen nor heard before.

Introducing

Nikolaus von Grundherr

Four friends from Munich, one of whom is an interior designer, bought the property in 2014 and are now only the sixth set of owners since it was built. They visit when they can, but Hilde the housekeeper, who lives close by, is the one who meets and greets.
