The Experience
Drive along country roads to reach this delightful stone house with 18th-century roots in Abjat. It’s next to the 13th-century church and opposite there’s a little square from which you can watch the world go by.
Step inside this charming house and one feels immediately at home. The kitchen, a large and social room, is the heart of the house. Those who seek peace can take a book to the library which has views over the garden. There is also a games room with a bar billiards table and dart board. Outside there is a shady loggia with seating, a brick barbecue, croquet area as well as the cooling swimming pool.
Borrow bikes to explore or jump into the car – Piégut is a ten-minute drive and has shops and a market on Wednesdays. There are also châteaux and ancient churches to visit and the prehistoric caves at Villars are half an hour away.

Such a beautiful old house in a gorgeous village. The photographs do not do the house justice - it's very special.

Location
The neighbourhood
The house is set in the village of Abjat-sur-Bandiat, voted one of the top twenty villages in France by the Telegraph. Beautiful châteaux such as Château de Puyguilhem and Château de La Rochefoucauld are an hour away, and there’s wonderful countryside to discover by bike, foot, canoe or horse, including lakes for wild swimming and fishing.
Local points of interest from Alistair Reid
- History buffs are spoilt for choice within a short drive - explore spectacular prehistoric caves, visit medieval churches, trace the steps of Coeur de Lion or marvel at Renaissance chateaux. Many have art exhibitions and recitals in the summer months.
- The bustling market at Piegut is a must for locals and tourists alike. It's the best for miles and right on your doorstep. Get there early for the best fish, meat and local produce and crafts. Stay for lunch in one of the excellent bistros.
- Meander along the dreamy River Dronne. Take in splendid Brantome and its Abbeye. See it from the water by canoe or boat trip. Head to Bordeilles and its fantastic chateau. If you are feeling energetic canoe between the two towns.
- Our pool is great, but serious swimmers may wish to take the plunge in a local lake. We recommend St Saud with its lifeguards. Or find a river for some wild swimming.
- Like antiques? The area has loads of vide greniers at the weekends for bargain hunters. There are brocantes too offering everything from 18th century decorative items to art deco design and Parisian fashion.
- If you like nature just walk out from the house. The many local trails are teeming with birds, butterflies and flowers. Foragers will enjoy searching for cepes and other delicacies from nature's larder.

Introducing
Alistair Reid
Alistair and Annie live in the UK but have a local person who looks after their holiday home for them. They have holiday lets in Devon and decided they would like to do the same with their house in France – while they use it themselves as much as possible, they want to share it with others too.
We stayed for two weeks at Annie's beautiful home and couldn't have been happier. The setting is glorious with a large enclosed garden – perfect for our small dog who can be a bit of an "explorer" – and a stunning pool, ideal for the children. The house had plenty of indoor space for the nine of us and very comfortable rooms. There's plenty to do nearby, with local markets throughout the week (the one in Piegut-Pluviers a particular favourite). The lake in St Esteph was fantastic, with free use of canoes and paddle boards. Angouleme, Périgueux and Limoges are all within easy driving distance.
