The Experience

Caro and Seán are passionate about organic and biodynamic wine, and on this ancient estate they will immerse you in the intricate and fascinating world of growing, creating and understanding it.

The setting is utterly lovely, with views pouring over steeply sloping ranks of vines, rolling hills and woodland. Your lodge, previously a ‘chai’ (winery), has been thoughtfully and eco-consciously converted – inside are honeyed oak and poplar, natural paints on hemp, chalk and stone walls and big windows for those marvellous views. Rainwater is harvested, and solar panels are on the way too.

It’s a short walk to Saussignac to order your daily bread from the community café and a superb restaurant. In fact, you could spend days here without using the car – a cycle ride along the Grande Randonnée, a stroll in the woods and vineyards, a lazy afternoon’s reading beneath a shady fig or swimming in the saltwater pool.

John, Bath

We had a superb couple of weeks staying for the second time at Château Feely. The properties and location are stunning and tranquil. There are so many things to do in the area with kids; chateaux, walking, historic towns, prehistoric caves and of course Château Feely's own wine tours and tastings, not to mention the delightful swimming pool overlooking vines and Château de Saussignac. Caro & Sean were very obliging in helping us to charge our electric car on site. The highlight of the holiday was being fortunate enough to take part in the start of the grape harvest. Highly recommended!

Chateau Feely is one of those very rare places where high expectations are massively exceeded. We stayed for 3 nights B&B in the beautiful Wine Lodge, we had planned to do lots of eating out and lots of visiting but it was such a peaceful environment with an amazing terrace overlooking the vineyard we didn’t actually go very far (well as far as the lovely pool!). Caro was a delightful host and we enjoyed learning all about the estate both from reading her books and from our wine tasting session. Overall a beautiful place to stay and we look forward to a return visit.

Cynthia, Toronto

We had a lovely stay in the wine lodge. Caro made sure we had everything we needed, and had helpful suggestions for local sights. We did a lunch wine pairing class - which was fun and yummy. We were happy to have the pool - since temperatures soared to over 40 degrees C. The space was very comfortable for 4 adults - and baths and showers worked well. We had access to laundry - which was great given how hot and sticky we got each day. The VIEWS ARE AMAZING - we all have fabulous pictures from the deck. There are lots of wineries, towns and cities within 1 hour so no shortage of things to do.

We spent a wonderful relaxing week in the Wine Lodge. Caro and Sean are so welcoming and helpful. We did a tour of their vineyard and had a wine tasting with Caro. Also a pool to cool down if it gets too hot. The winelodge is very well equipped and comfortable. The perfect place to locate to visit the Dordogne region. Lovely restaurant Le Lion d'Or for dinner just a short walk through the vineyards to the village of Saussignac. We will have to go back so much more to do and see.

Location

The neighbourhood

Saussignac is less than 1km away – it has an excellent restaurant. The small town of Gardonne (4km) has shops and a few places to eat including a pizzeria, and Sainte-Foy-la-Grande (11 km) has a fabulous farmers' market on Saturday mornings. The bigger town of Bergerac (18km) has everything you could need.

Local points of interest from Caro & Seán Feely

  • Read Caro's books - 6 published including the latest Cultivating Change in the hamac under the cool shade of the trees in the park (both houses have also have a small library of great holiday reads)
  • Walk to Saussignac for Sunday coffee at the community cafe (1km) enjoying the views, smells and life of the charming local village
  • Breakfast on the balcony or terrace taking in the stunning views of the organic vineyards and dreaming about what you are going to do today. Bird watching and deer-spotting are excellent particularly at dawn and dusk
  • Drink the wine from the vineyard you're looking at: taste, see, smell and feel the terroir of this magical organic and biodynamic farm
  • Walk to Restaurant Le Melange in Saussignac (1km) for a delicious dinner then have a romantic moonlit walk home
  • Stargaze: being rural means little light pollution and a fabulous starry dome in the heavens

Introducing

Caro & Seán Feely

Enthusiastic and smiley Caro and Seán (originally from South Africa, and with Irish roots) live here with their dog called Dora and two cats. They bought the vineyard in 2005 to follow their dream of creating great wines on fine terroir, and Caro, who does the meet and greet, has written five books on their experiences. She's happy to ferry guests to and from the station in Gardonne.
