The Experience

It is rare indeed to visit an empty house in midwinter and experience an instant warmth that brings the place to life. Your French/German hosts – Valérie and Frank – come from the world of performing arts (she a dance choreographer, he a set designer) and have now turned their attention to viticulture and making your stay special; they have the gift of hospitality tenfold, leave you cherries and walnuts (in season!) and love to share their passion for producing organic wine. Your space? A beautifully renovated, 400-year-old ochre-washed ‘pigeonnier’ with a sun-drenched terrace on an idyllic old farm among vines, a five-minute walk from the village. Step through a glazed door to a stylish yet cosy vaulted and beamed living room with a cool stone floor, minimal high-quality furniture and old walls. The kitchen is simple, the bedroom is fresh and light, and there are single beds on the mezzanine. There’s a pool to dunk in (yours from 10am to 6pm), Saint Émilion is close, the beaches of Arcachon and the boulevards of Bordeaux are an easy drive, and in summer Castillon gives a re-enactment of the last battle of the Hundred Years War.

Reviews

David, Oakham

A 400 year old sand coloured stone Pigeonnier, nestled amongst acres of vineyards with the banks of the Dordogne metres away. A well-maintained private pool providing welcome relief from the heat of the midday sun. It's peaceful yet, 15 mins from Saint Emilion, 10 mins from a small market town (and cracking boulongerie) a local restaurant is 5 mins walk away and not surprisingly provides fantastic fare (and wine)! The real stars here are Valerie and Frank. Perfect hosts who manage to be kind, attentive, generous and at the same time totally unobtrusive. A perfectly magical holiday.

Claire

A very peaceful and relaxing place to stay. Valerie and Frank are perfect hosts - helpful and generous without being intrusive. Good bakeries and groceries in Castilon which is 5 miles away (very flat to cycle) A well equipped kitchen in the house - everything we needed to cook for ourselves most evenings. Bordeaux easy by train from castillon. The pool is heavenly!

We had a very enjoyable fortnight at Le Pigeonnier. The photos do not really do justice to what a delightful setting it is — the warm colours of the dovecote stonework, the encroaching vines, the well-maintained grounds (in full flower), the quietness. Valérie and Frank were charming hosts, very responsive when needed but otherwise unobtrusive. There is little in Flaujagues except a good restaurant, but provisions are only a short drive away in Gensac. The small wineries in the Entre-Deux-Mers region are worth seeking out. All up, a great experience and not a thing to fault!

Catherine, Huddersfield

Our fortnight at Le Pigeonnier was glorious. We loved the place, the pool and above all, the people. With their warmth and unobtrusive hospitality, Valerie and Frank simply couldn't have made us feel more welcome. St Emilion and Bergerac are within easy striking distance and beautiful Bordeaux just a short train ride away. (Park free of charge at the station in Castillon!) It's also a great place to recharge your batteries. We had a couple of really relaxing stay-put days where we sploshed in the pool, watched the sun set spectacularly and sat under the stars by night. Just perfect!

Anton, Perthshire

We absolutely loved our time here. The house and setting were just perfect for our young family. The kids loved the pool and playing among the vines. Valérie and Frank were the most amazing hosts who made us feel most welcome. Will definitely be doing a return trip in the future.
