The Experience

Built in the 1800s for the Bishop of Oloron, the current owners bought it in a dilapidated state and gently transformed it into an elegant, light-flooded house. Bowl through a grand gateway then up the tree-lined drive for far-reaching views towards the Pyrenees. Inside there’s plenty of space to relax and recharge: a terrace to catch the views, a games room in the cellar, a kitchen/dining area built for socialising.

On fine days you’ll be on the terrace leading from the kitchen for morning coffee and evening apéritifs with laps in the pool in between, or days out exploring the mountains and some of the pretty villages. On chilly days you can light the wood-burner and snuggle on sofas in front of the TV after a day exploring.

It’s 2km into charming Oloron-Sainte-Marie, buzzy with shops, bakeries and restaurants – La Part des Anges, next to the cathedral, has a fine terrace and excellent lunch and dinner menus. Friday morning is market day, so stock up on local produce for a relaxing meal at home.

Reviews

The views from this beautiful house are quite breathtaking. Sitting on a hilltop above the riverside town of Oloron-Sainte-Marie, La Joliette enjoys panoramic views over the Vallée d'Aspe and La Pierre Saint Martin ski resort. In a lovely tranquil setting, yet only a two-minute drive from the town centre, the house is beautifully furnished and flooded with light and has a large heated pool.

Location

The neighbourhood

You feel nicely private in this stand-alone house yet you're a very short drive or stroll into a bustling market town for supplies and good places to eat. There are plenty of options to be active on land and water but equally you can spend the day at home and feel like there's enough to keep everyone occupied. It's about 1.5 hours to the coast, try glitzy Biarritz or the wild waves at Hossegor.

Local points of interest from John Leslie

  • White water rafting – At Soeix, just 2km from the house. A lot of fun and safe for all ages. Book in advance from the start point or tourist office. Allow half a day.
  • Le Petit Train, Artouste – This is a day trip and a stunning drive to get there. Go via Laruns to Artouste, which is about an hour’s drive. This is the highest mountain railway in Europe and it starts with a cable car ride from Artouste.
  • Degustation in Jurancon – Borrow the book in the drawing room and follow the map. Most vineyards will do tasting if you just turn up. Try Château Jolys and Lamouroux, but there are many others to choose from.
  • Visit Pau – A lovely city with a fascinating ancient quarter and château. Some great restaurants as well. Try Le Dauphin, very close to the château.
  • Take the cable car up the Pic du Midi – This 9,500 high peak is magnifient, and has an observatory and a planetarium. Check it out on the internet or look at the booklet in the house. The cable car leaves from the ski resort of La Mongie.
  • Loads of other things to do, or just enjoy the relaxing atmosphere of the house, the amazing views and the pool.

Introducing

John Leslie

British owners John and Pippa bought the house in 2005 and completely transformed it from the rather sorry state it had fallen into. During your stay, you will meet Nathalie, the friendly housekeeper, who speaks excellent English and can help you with local restaurant recommendations and ideas for activities and outings.
