The Experience

Step in to find beautiful, recycled oak, ash and pine, the scent of essential oils, and welcoming, smiling Marie. Inside: books, board games and scattered sofas. Outside: a dreamy garden, a sleek table for dining, and loungers by the pool.

The sawmill and forge are centuries old. Former machinery is on display and an exciting glass floor reveals the stream below. Bedrooms (one on the ground floor, four under the eaves) are simple yet luxurious: organic toiletries and beautiful linen.

Don’t miss La Maison du Comté in Poligny, a traditional dairy a half hour drive, or Les Salines, the saltworks down the road. Hike amid oaks and beeches – the Jura mountains are covered in them – and return to teatime treats. Tea or hot chocolate? Crêpes or madeleines? Marie’s breakfasts, bistro dinners and table d’hôtes too are a wonder – locally sourced and inevitably delicious.

Reviews

Marie and Mathieu have skilfully created a unique and welcoming space. My husband, baby and I had the most relaxing time and we also ate superbly! Breakfast was not only a feast for the eyes, it was also full of delicious surprises. Both dinners were fantastic, we enjoyed being introduced to Jura wine (they have a great wine list). It is also a great base for exploring the region's natural beauty.

Location

The neighbourhood

La Scierie sits on the edge of the peaceful hamlet of Blegny, 3km from the small town of Salins-les-Bains (a few shops, eateries and a casino). Foodies and wine lovers should head to Arbois, a 20-minute drive, for artisan restaurants and bars (and arty shop La Fabrik). Forests, waterfalls, lakes, caves and vast views surround you. Hike, bike, paraglide in summer; ski and snowshoe in winter.

Introducing

Marie & Mathieu Vassal

Mad about sport and the outdoors, Marie and Mathieu met at school, moved to the Alps, and raised a family of three. In 2014 they fell in love with the foresty Jura - and a dilapidated sawmill in a heavenly setting. After three years of hard work that involved the whole family, Mathieu's building skills and Marie's passion for food resulted in this - an outstanding all-season guesthouse and spa.
