The Experience
You’re high up at 500 metres, the views are spectacular and the peace palpable – the Cévennes has been a place of refuge throughout history so you’ve landed somewhere very special. The house is old, with three main buildings on lots of different levels, and is decorated in a smart modern but casual style with thick, natural weaves, wood and wrought iron. The main sitting room has deep sofas, a big open fireplace and a very large screen if you’re stuck indoors.
Mostly you’ll be outside, cooling off in the gorgeous pool or braving the river, finding quiet spots in the lush garden for a read or a doze, eating on one of the terraces with incredible views. The outdoor kitchen is very handy and the indoor one has everything a serious cook could need – you can hire a chef if you prefer. You’re left fresh bread and croissants every morning at 7.30 and cleaning is done every day.
Retreats, experiences and courses are evolving – just ask.

We think you'll love
- Having such a beautifully wild and wooded valley to yourselves with the river tinkling or charging through depending on the time of year
- The deep comfort of the house and having so much space to be together or get away from each other
- Walking in the forest, spotting birds, looking out for wild boar, rabbits and deer, feeling immersed in nature
You should know
- The number of steps and different levels would make it tricky for the less agile of all ages
- It's quite a trek to shops so you need to be well organised – no nipping out for that forgotten milk
- The road up gets narrower as you near the house and ends in an unmade track

Location
The neighbourhood
Forest surrounds you and the river Salindrenque starts here on their estate at the junction of two smaller streams. Soudorgues is the nearest village, 3km but a good 10-minute drive because of the road. Here you'll find a small café/restaurant and there's a weekly market with local produce. Lasalle is 8km and has a bigger weekly market, a small supermarket and a choice of restaurants.
Local points of interest from Paul Houlsby
- Swimming holes in the river on the property or hikes from the house up to Grande Randonnée 61 and 67 + Rocher de l'Aigle (1,080m).
- Market days in Lasalle, St Jean du Gard and Anduze.
- La Bambouseraie, Anduze (bamboo plantation) and Grottes (Caves) - Trabuc, Desmoiselles.
- Steam train from St Jean du Gard to Anduze and Musée du Désert, Mialet.
- Further afield: Uzes market, Pont du Gard (Roman aqueduct), Nimes, Arles, Montpellier, The Camargue.
- There are 3 principal buildings. The main house was formerly used for silk production, the clede for chestnut smoking and the living room was a bergerie where goats were kept within living memory.
