Lots of history to soak up in this 500-year-old mas, long ago a sheep and then a silkworm farm. Beautiful apartments sit around the higgledy-piggledy roofed courtyard, sharing a pool for guests and several garden areas next to the owners’ house (where dogs and chickens roam). Kate and Graham’s thoughtful restorations and extras for guests are spot on – find an iPad loaded with information and a welcome app, bikes to borrow, fresh bread delivered daily and a weekly welcome supper. Across the courtyard, steps lead up to Le Grenier, a former grain store for four, and Le Murier, the tower for two, which connect across a dining terrace. They’re bookable together to sleep six, but would never both be rented separately, so you’ll always have privacy for your own group. La Bergerie, the barn for two has vaulted ceilings and cool spaces, as well as its own private, secured courtyard – perfect for dog owners. Head out for dinner at one of the several restaurants to choose from in the village, a short walk away – it’s also one of the Plus Beaux Villages de France. So much to do – visit Uzès, hike in the Cévennes, taste wines and visit Roman ruins including the extraordinary Pont du Gard.
