The Experience

Delightfully, typically French. Having begun life as a hunting lodge before being upgraded to house a wine producer, this handsome manor is perfect now for families who relish the vieille France feel. Light pours into high-ceilinged, uncluttered rooms – downstairs doors removed for an easy flow to the space. There’s a simple, practical kitchen, a long-tabled dining room and plenty of books and games.

Things are family comfortable rather than overly smart. Tall-windowed, colour-washed bedrooms with garden views share two large shower rooms and two separate loos. And there’s masses of space in the gated, walled garden too – where oleander, wisteria and lavender bloom – with its private pool, boules, barbecue, covered veranda, pointing cypress, poplar trees and treehouse.

Treat yourselves to dinner at L’Olea in Maruéjols, a half-hour walk or five-minute drive, for lovely food in a gorgeous olive grove setting.

The perfect house for large family gatherings. Rural, lesser-known Saint-Côme is the perfect village from which to explore many attractions – from historic towns and medieval villages to beaches, markets and vineyards. There are walks nearby, rivers for kayaking and wild swimming, restaurants to suit all tastes. Or simply linger by your pool, enjoy the garden and al fresco meals in the shady, wisteria-framed veranda.

Absolutely wonderful!!!! We spent 2 weeks fabulous weeks here with extended family, and could not believe how perfect Mas de Mahystre was! Claire was so helpful and we felt very, very welcome! We had an amazing time at Mas de Mahystre for a week. The house is absolutely beautiful and also works perfectly for a family holiday with lovely outdoor seating areas and, of course, the fantastic swimming pool which our 10 month old absolutely loved. The area is wonderful, not too touristy but also lots to see, eat and visit and all the amenities you need nearby. Claire was really helpful throughout the booking and visit and communication was prompt. We would definitely come back and stay here again - Mas de Mahystre a truly special place.

Reluctant to write a review as this place is a real find! Three generations stayed for a week including children of 18 months and 3. Everything is as described. You cannot help but slow down here. The grandparents and the little ones always find that easy - but it was wonderful watching the young adults switch off too. You definitely need a car but the next village is easily walkable to pick up pastries for the morning. We visited Pont du Gard, Avignon and la Grande Motte but happily spent days at the house. Claire was great at responding to queries before, during and after our stay. Thank you,

Location

The neighbourhood

Montpellier, Avignon, Uzès and Arles are all less than an hour's drive. Visit Pont du Gard, the three-tiered Roman aqueduct, or Anduze, famous for its pottery. Horse ride in Maruejols; climb, canoe or wild swim in the Gardon and Hérault rivers. Taste wines. Forget the car for a day and catch a bus from the village to Vergèze and a train station – lovely to go car free and visit hard-to-park towns.

Local points of interest from Claire Ashworth

  • The lovely market town of Calvisson is a 5 minute drive away. On Sunday mornings the popular, bustling, authentic market animates the main square and surrounding streets. A real gem of a market with delicious local produce.
  • The Roman city of Nimes is a beautiful 25 minute drive over the hills. The pedestrian old town is utterly charming and once you've marveled at the Roman Arena and other Roman remains, there are hundreds of delightful cafes in the squares and streets.
  • The vibrant university town of Montpellier is a mere 40 minute drive away. It is an enticing melange of old and modern architecture and the old town is bursting with creativity. Great for shopping, wandering, dreaming and people watching.
  • The mediterranean sea is only 35 minutes by car. We love the beaches in between La Grande Motte and Palavas. There are so many fantastic beach bars and restaurants to choose from or you can just pitch up on the soft sand with your umbrella and towel.
  • Fabulous cycling and walking surrounds the house. No need to jump in the car, just head towards the vines! If you want hills, head towards the Cevennes mountains north of our house for some beautiful villages, river swimming and canoeing.
  • The medieval town of Usez, the Haribo sweet museum and the Roman Pont du Gard are all very close to each other and what a perfect combination for a wonderful family day out. Something for everyone within a 45 minute drive.
