The Experience

In the rolling green hills of the Aveyron, the Pitkins’ renovation of their barn is impressively innovative: original beams and exposed stone walls remain intact while light floods in through modern Velux windows, the staircase is constructed of wood and glass, and there are cut stone floors throughout. You’ll love the roomy communal living space with its arched beams, plenty of seating, a music system, UK TV and internet. The kitchen design is clever too – a happy mix of old and new with much upcycled from the old barn and plenty of kit for a foodie group. Big, clean-lined downstairs bedrooms are light and airy with great views; bathrooms are large and swish. Outside living centres on the terrace off the dining area with another long view and seductive swimming pool beyond. There are bikes to pedal off on, good local walks, plenty of Viaur river swimming spots, fine hilltop villages, like Cordes and Najac, to explore and advice on hand for anything else you may want to do – owners Richard and Anna are in the farmhouse next door.

Reviews

Marie-Louise, Stroud

Wow! Gites des Milans blew us away. The photos don't do it justice, particularly how well finished and appointed the house is inside. The views from the terrace were utterly mesmerising, be it early morning, midday or watching the beautiful sunsets across the hills. We were 2 families with 4 teenagers who had 'the best holiday ever'. Wild swimming, canoeing with rapids, treetop climbing courses and an inflatable course in the local river kept us all entertained. Having the hosts onsite was brilliant and they were endlessly helpful and full of local advice. Loved it!

Helen, Suffolk

Our two families of adults and older teens had a fantastic two weeks here. Richard and Anna were super hosts, always on hand but never intrusive. The barn has been converted beautifully with masses of space, all the home comforts we needed, gorgeous views and a lovely pool. We enjoyed lazy days swimming and playing pétanque, but also explored the stunning area: Albi, Najac, Cordes and St Antonin are all delightful (great kayaking at the latter). We also walked and hiked from the barn to explore the river. It’s a wonderful place in a gorgeous area with excellent hosts-visit if you can!

Rachel, Oxford

What a wonderful place to stay. Stunning home-from-home. The peaceful and beautiful setting really made us all switch off (apart from the overly competitive games in the pool and table tennis!). Richard and Anna were perfect hosts. Discreet, yet on hand when needed.Their superb local knowledge and passion for the area made our stay even more memorable. We had a mixed age range with the children (5-16 years old), but the activities in and around the Gite as well as the hosts recommendations for the families were spot on. Would love to return to drink wine and watch the stunning sunsets. Perfect

Yvonne, Southampton

We had a fabulous week at Gite de Milan. The house was exceptional - spacious, clean and beautifully appointed. Richard and Anna were wonderful hosts, accessible and helpful yet discreet. It was very hot while we were there, and although the property does not have air conditioning, Richard have us good tips on how to keep the house cool. The house has so many parts to enjoy with a place for every moment. The views and sunsets were stunning. The inflatables on the river at Laguepie, the pretty village of Nejac, and the activity centre near by are all highly recommended.

Peter, Kendal

Grandparents, children and grandchildren had a fantastic week at Gite de Milans. Thanks, Richard and Anna, we all loved our stay. Marvellous living accommodation, great pool and fascinating towns, villages and countryside to visit.

Location

The neighbourhood

Local points of interest from Richard Pitkin

  • For the wine enthusiast, the house is well situated. Only 30 mins from Gaillac region and just over an hour to Cahors(the "original" Malbec). Vineyard tours and degustations abound, with recommendations available.
  • The birdwatcher, whether serious birder or interested enthusiast will have plenty to enjoy. Either from the terrace, looking down on the soaring swallows and birds of prey, or from the migration viewing station 5 mins away. Kites, Hoopoe, Oriole and more.
  • Only 5 minutes away, guests looking for a challenge can try out the Via Ferrata. A cabled climbing route in the Viaur valley, which finishes with a spectacular zip wire high up above the river. Or take a trip to Najac and kayak+picnic on the Aveyron river
  • Extensive walking right from the house. Walk down into the beautiful valley of the Viaur river on well marked footpaths, and maybe take a swim when you get there. Look out for Kingfishers, Dippers and Herons.
  • Only a few minutes drive, there are 2 restaurants popular with locals and visitors alike. La Chataigneraie sits next to the river, and serves generous crepes to the background of live jazz. Le Relais is open all year, and is a good value quality restaurant
  • With loads of local markets to choose from on most days of the week, why not try the night market in Najac? Bring your own cutlery, and choose your dinner from the stalls of local producers. Sit at long tables in a convivial atmosphere with live music.
