The Experience
Sarah and Donald have lived in Myanmar and Vanuatu and this beautifully refurbished 150-year-old house reflects their travels. Teak furniture, rugs and original paintings blend with oak floors, marble fireplaces, shutters and high ceilings – natural light shines throughout.
Bedrooms unfold over two floors, two with balconies, one tucked away and two that are perfect for kids, filled with books, games, a dressing up box and heaps of Lego. The bathrooms are all spanking new. So are all the kitchen mod cons, offset by a time-worn French drapers table repurposed as an island.
Wander out to the huge mature garden and gaze at distant views of the Pyrenees. Pick fruit from the trees, splash in the pool or find a quiet corner to read. The village is on your doorstep for supplies and nearby towns have plenty of restaurants. You can cross the border into Spain in 30 minutes and Toulouse, La Ville Rose, is an hour away.

Location
The neighbourhood
Skiing in winter, hiking, climbing and cycling in summer, you can do it all from here. Nearby Saint-Bertrand-de-Comminges (a Plus Beaux Village) is a 15-minute drive and has a great restaurant, La Table de Saint-Bertrand. Visit the Caves of Gargas for Upper Paleolithic rock art, the natural Balnéa Spa in Génos and the lake in Loudenvielle.
Local points of interest from Sarah
- Saint Bertrand de Comminge: about 12 mins away. It's spectacular and a feted member of the Most Beautiful Villages in France Association. The main square and abbey are beautiful. There are performances, markets and recitals here regularly.
- Anères is our next door village. Every year they host a Silent Film Festival in June which is amazing. There is also a hippie bar/restaurant called Café du Village. You buy tokens rather than use cash, but it's very jolly and laid back. Hours vary.
- There are a lots of amazing runs nearby taking you through the prairie land or along rivers, and river or lake swimming options. We can share maps.
- Arreau is a mountain village about a 30-minute drive with an amazing farmers' market. It's a proper mountain village, quite touristy, but very pretty and with a handful of nice restaurants.
- Grottes de Gargas: about 10 minutes away from our house are some grottoes with neolithic cave paintings. You have to book for a tour. Take a warm coat, it's pretty cold underground.
- There is a natural swimming pond in our village called Les Ocybelles. It's only open in the summer months but definitely worth a visit.
