The Experience
Bowl along the Payrac road, through hilly wooded countryside – hardly a car to be seen. Wash up in Serres, a lovely little hamlet of stone houses whose steep slate roofs are tiled like scales. La Grange, part barn, part house, on split levels, was renovated some years ago by its English owners, and fused into one airy, spacious whole. Enter a sunny oak-fitted kitchen with two check-clothed tables, one large, one small; hard to believe the animals once lived here, now the beams are painted white and the door opens to a terrace for al fresco meals. Up the oak staircase is a lovely large sitting room, full of comfort and light. Bedroom walls are of mellow pale stone, curtains are linen, rugs ethnic, wardrobes new pine, bathrooms white-tiled and capacious. Although toddlers must be watched outside, La Grange is pretty much perfect for family hols: all thoughtfully furnished yet nothing too precious, and a heated pool in the garden with loungers and gorgeous views. Dine out in pretty Gourdon, then venture beyond: to Domme, Sarlat, the caves of Padirac and the wall paintings of Peche Merle.

La Grange at Serres is a spacious, beautifully converted farmhouse in expansive grounds and with a lovely swimming pool. Every aspect of the house is at the highest standard. Serres is a delightful hamlet deep in the countryside and a couple of miles from the village of Payrac which has an excellent restaurant - Le Sechoir - as well as a good pizzeria. The house is within a few miles of two towns - Soulliac and Gourdon - both well worth visiting, as well as wonderful Rocamadour. The situation of the house is so peaceful and the views delightful. We really recommend this property.

Second year in a row a La Grange and it did not disappoint. Absolutely loved it. The pool is really fantastic and ideal for kids. The surrounding area has so much to do and visit within a 40 min drive and yet you have all the peace in the world in a fantastic house which enjoys being quiet but yet close enough to the local village for daily connections. House is superbly fitted out, very spacious. The local contact (in times of need) is brilliant. You will not regret going here. We loved it.

We had a fantastic family holiday here. A beautiful house and grounds with a lovely pool was perfect, lots of space but cosy too. Location was great with lots of interesting markets, towns and the Dordogne river all a short drive away. Highly recommended.

We had such an amazing time and La Grange, the house has everything you need, also it is easy to keep cool especially when the heat outside hit 40C, the pool was amazing and heated, the kids loved the many hours we spent there but equally, so many activities to do within 30 mins driving, ideal location. The owners really did a superb job on the development, so many lovely walks nearby and the locals of Payrac are so nice and so understanding for my bad pronouncing french. Ideal house for a family of 1 with 4 or a family of 3 with 4 (12pps), so much room and space. Highly recommend.

Location
The neighbourhood
Local points of interest from Brian Lever
- The region is full of medieval towns to explore, some close by include Gourdon, Souillac, Sarlat, Rocamadour, Martel and Domme with its magnificent views.
- You can saunter through traditional french markets, we recommend those in Souillac, Gourdon or Sarlat.
- The river Dordogne, groups and families will have fantastic fun spending the day canoeing or kayaking lazily downstream.
- Day trips spent visiting caves, underground rivers, castles and magnificent gardens are a treat for adults and children alike. There is even a working 14th century watermill close by.
- There’s a whole range of wonderful restaurants where you can sample the regional delicacies.
- For those wanting to travel way back in time, visit the prehistoric cave paintings at Lascaux and Peche Merle.

Our family of 7 had a wonderful week at La Grange; the weather was hot and sunny and we appreciated the coolness of the house, which was beautifully appointed and very comfortable. Our grandsons (9 & 12) spent hours each day in the pool and the large garden was perfect for games of badminton, etc. We explored the area and enjoyed our visits to Sarlat and Gourdon and sampling the many culinary delights. We would have no hesitation in returning if we have the chance!
