The Experience
Bowl along the Payrac road, through hilly wooded countryside – hardly a car to be seen. Wash up in Serres, a lovely little hamlet of stone houses whose steep slate roofs are tiled like scales. La Grange, part barn, part house, on split levels, was renovated some years ago by its English owners, and fused into one airy, spacious whole. Enter a sunny oak-fitted kitchen with two check-clothed tables, one large, one small; hard to believe the animals once lived here, now the beams are painted white and the door opens to a terrace for al fresco meals. Up the oak staircase is a lovely large sitting room, full of comfort and light. Bedroom walls are of mellow pale stone, curtains are linen, rugs ethnic, wardrobes new pine, bathrooms white-tiled and capacious. Although toddlers must be watched outside, La Grange is pretty much perfect for family hols: all thoughtfully furnished yet nothing too precious, and a heated pool in the garden with loungers and gorgeous views. Dine out in pretty Gourdon, then venture beyond: to Domme, Sarlat, the caves of Padirac and the wall paintings of Peche Merle.

Idyllic, isolated (but only 4 miles from Payrac) and well appointed house. We were two families with 5 young children who never wanted to leave the pool. Beautiful quiet country lanes for cycling, walking and running. Close to fantastic Dordogne and tourist attractions if you choose. One of the best holiday lets we could find and a truly spectacular friendly region of France - and understandably the visitor book shows many repeat visitors.

A family group of nine stayed at La Grange at the end of July 2014 and found it to be a delightful place to be. Well equiped, very comfortable and spacious with plenty of areas for group activity and yet easy to find a spot to be quiet and undisturbed. Highly recommended by each and every one of us.

As an extended family of 6 we stayed for 7 days in July 2014 at Le Grange and we can only say positive things about the place! The house is absolutely lovely, its beautifully furnished, the kitchen has everything you require and the area is simply beautiful. Unfortunately we were very unlucky with the weather so were not really able to make use of the great swimming pool! Jackie who does the meet and greet and handles any potential issues is delightful and highly efficient. We would highly recommend the property for anyone looking for an authentic country stay in the South West of France.

We are an extended family of 8 - 4 adults and 4 kids and we had a fabulous time at La Grange!! The house is beautiful, well maintained and the setting perfect. The hosts are really helpful and easy to contact and Jackie, the local contact, was lovely and helpful. There are great farmers markets very close by, many things to do and even if you don't go anywhere you will be happy just hanging out by the pool or walking to the local baker up the lane. (Try her croissants - they are amazing!!)

Location
The neighbourhood
Local points of interest from Brian Lever
- The region is full of medieval towns to explore, some close by include Gourdon, Souillac, Sarlat, Rocamadour, Martel and Domme with its magnificent views.
- You can saunter through traditional french markets, we recommend those in Souillac, Gourdon or Sarlat.
- The river Dordogne, groups and families will have fantastic fun spending the day canoeing or kayaking lazily downstream.
- Day trips spent visiting caves, underground rivers, castles and magnificent gardens are a treat for adults and children alike. There is even a working 14th century watermill close by.
- There’s a whole range of wonderful restaurants where you can sample the regional delicacies.
- For those wanting to travel way back in time, visit the prehistoric cave paintings at Lascaux and Peche Merle.
