The Experience
This old farmhouse is built into the side of the valley, with the rugged beauty of the Lot laid out below. Red squirrels scamper about the terraced gardens as you tuck into your morning croissant; lounge in the plunge pool to the sound of the fountain gently bubbling, watch the sheer white cliffs glowing indigo as the sun sets.
Downstairs is the double suite with a beautiful freestanding bath and its own garden terrace. Upstairs the living room looks out over vines and there is a kitchen kitted out for cooks and well stocked with basics. You’ll find lots of local goodies from your charming hosts, too.
There are steep climbs and spectacular views on the National Park’s well-marked hiking trails, with maps to borrow. For something more leisurely, head out early to the boulangerie in Marcilhac-sur-Célé, or the market in Cajarc, before cycling along the river road, stopping for a dip and picnic along the way.

Location
The neighbourhood
You're off a quiet country lane in a tiny hamlet. The nearest town, beautifully preserved medieval Marcilhac, is a six-minute drive, and has a bakery, grocers shop and café and there is an organic farm shop just up the road in Brengues. Larger Cajarc, a 15-minute drive, has a good Saturday market, restaurants and local shops for groceries and wine, as well as a big supermarket.
Local points of interest from Deirdre McGlone
- Saint‑Cirq‑Lapopie - One of France’s most beautiful villages, perched high above the Lot. Wander its medieval lanes, artisan shops and stunning viewpoints — a magical place to explore during your stay at Le Malbec.
- Pech Merle Cave - Discover extraordinary prehistoric paintings, including the famous spotted horses. The guided tour reveals 30,000 years of human history in a dramatic underground setting.
- Célé River Wild Swimming - The Célé is calm, gentle and perfect for a cooling dip on warm days. Find a quiet spot along the bank, slip into the water and enjoy the peaceful rhythm of the valley, just minutes from Le Malbec.
- Rocamadour - This cliffside village rises dramatically above the valley. Its chapels, winding paths and panoramic views make it an unforgettable day trip, especially at sunrise or sunset.
- Local Markets & Food - Explore vibrant village markets filled with fresh produce, cheeses, wines and charcuterie. A wonderful way to meet local producers and taste the flavours of the Lot.
- Lot Valley Cycling - Quiet country roads, rolling hills and river views make the Lot and Célé valleys ideal for cycling. Several beautiful loops begin right from the door of Le Malbec.

Introducing
Deirdre McGlone
Your generous and fun-loving hosts, Deidre and Marc, met when they worked together in a high end hotel in Ireland. They turned it into a destination of great renown, before selling up to travel around France, eventually settling in this enchanting valley. They fell in love with the hamlet and are lovingly bringing each building back from ruin.
