The Experience

The estate dates back to the 12th century and the ruin of the church has roots in the 11th. Inside, the lodge is thoroughly elegant and spacious; you enter through a long vaulted hall with a refectory table (there are two bedrooms down here) then up one level to another dining area, a lovely living room with working fireplace and a kitchen corner, then bay windows opening to green views.

On rainy days you can listen to music, read books by the fireside or slope off to your very own spa with a pool and jacuzzi. In summer you’ll be glued to the deep terrace, eating meals at the enormous wooden table, firing up the Weber barbecue and admiring the views. You’ll hear plenty of birdsong and the odd bleating sheep, but otherwise this is a very quiet spot.

A welcome hamper awaits and the owners can organise a chef for a medieval dinner (costumes provided), archery lessons, summer lunches in the garden, or sunset drinks and nibbles.

Reviews

A beautiful, stylish and comfortable address in a green and medieval wonderland; providing the bliss of peace and quiet in an eco-responsible environment. Loved it.

Christoph, Cologne

It's actually a small castle converted into a holiday home! Surrounded by the neighboring old half-timbered houses and church, you feel like you're in a historic setting. Nevertheless, there's a 37-degree (!) pool in the basement, as well as a swimming pool. The host is truly warm and helpful. We felt very comfortable throughout.

Sebastian, Köln

We were absolutely thrilled with the holiday home. We spent a week there and felt very comfortable. The living room is inviting to relax, and the beds are exceptionally comfortable. We particularly liked the spacious, idyllic garden—with its charming chickens as a bonus. Vincent gave us a warm welcome and showed us the house in detail. He was always available and very helpful during our stay. Thank you so much, Vincent! Overall, we had a wonderful time and would gladly return anytime.

Charlotte, Köln

Great accommodation, lacking nothing. For 8 people, we had more than enough space, and there are plenty of opportunities to relax on the grounds, on the terrace, or in the pool. The surrounding grounds, with their chickens, geese, and sheep, are also inviting to explore. Simply a wonderful place!

Julia, Cologne

A beautiful, spacious house, very stylishly furnished. There's plenty of space outside, too, in the beautifully landscaped grounds with chickens, sheep, and a fire pit. The spa area is also a relaxing place. The whirlpool is truly spacious and offers enough space for 6 people.

Location

The neighbourhood

There are two acres of grassy space and mature fruit trees to wander around and sheep, goats, chickens and geese to say hello to. The nearest bakery is 3kms in Acquigny where there is also a beautiful château. Louviers is 6kms for a large street market on Saturdays and a small one on Wednesdays, lots of restaurants and shops. Rouen is 35kms for the famous cathedral, river port and opera house.

Local points of interest from Vincent Depuydt

  • The Motte Castrale of the site dates from around the 9th century, from the Viking invasions on the Seine leading to the various seats of the city of Paris.
  • In the 12th century, the English king Henry 1st Beauclerc son of Guillaume the conqueror, fortified the Motte Castrale de Mesnil Jourdain with stones to protect the borders of the Duchy of Normandy from the kingdom of France.
  • Today, the 12th century foundations are still visible on top of the Motte Castrale. In the 14th and 15th century during the Hundred Years War, stones from the 12th century were used to rebuild the church and the Manor of Hellenvilliers just opposite.
  • In the 17th century, a notable from the parliament of Rouen bought the seigniorial fiefdom of Mesnil Jourdain. he had the hunting lodge built in 1605.
  • After the French Revolution, the hunting lodge became a relay for pilgrims on the way to Saint Jacques de Compostela passing through Evreux. The building is called 'The relay of Saint Jacques'.
  • During the Second World War, this former hunting lodge was occupied by a division of the English army, and the inhabitants of the village nicknamed it 'The English flag'.
