The Experience

A lovely, sunlit house with plenty of room for everybody – find three separate seating areas, one outside, a formal sitting room and an open-plan kitchen/dining/living room with doors to the garden. With a dining table for 10 and rattan sofas, this is a great spot for entertaining too. There are two barbecues – a charcoal Weber plus a big gas one – lawns spacious enough to play football on, hammocks, an ancient oak tree, and a pool to cool off in surrounded by loungers. You’ll spend most of your time in the garden and you’ll find outdoor games waiting.

For those few chilly days you can light a fire and settle with a good book or cook up a storm in the top-notch kitchen with a welcome basket and plenty of basics to get you started. Bedrooms, two with en suites, are a good size with storage space and pretty views; the four bathrooms are sparkling.

The village is a simple one with a bakery and a small supermarket.

Reviews

A big, spacious house for the perfect rural getaway for families and friends. the generous owners clearly want their guests to have a fabulous time and have thought of everything people might like. There are endless spaces to congregate or find a quiet spot- from the outdoor sitting room, to the bench under the grandfather oak tree at the very far end of the garden.

Mat, London

Beautiful house in an incredibly peaceful part of France. A short bike ride gets you to Loulay where you can pick up croissants and ride them back over the sunflower fields. The house is very well appointed and we had a fantastic and relaxing time. Sandra was very responsive and helpful. Would recommend without reservation.

Janet, Banbury

Beautiful house and garden. Very comfortable and homely with lots of everything you could possibly want. Pool invaluable when 37 degrees! Well situated for La Rochelle (a must visit), Rochefort, coast and other interesting places. Easy cycling around for all ages. Market in St. Jean D'Angely on Wednesdays as well as Saturday was a bonus. Just fabulous!

David, Chippenham

Beautiful place in a terrific location, close to a lovely town with all the amenities. We had several day trips out but it's very easy to stay in and enjoy the house and pool. The village has an epicerie that was serving pizzas on Fridays.

Dianne

We have had a wonderful stay, thank you! The villa is perfect and so well equipped. Rory (aged 6) absolutely loved the pool. We loved exploring the local area and sailing in La Rochelle, kayaking in Saint Jean d’Angely, the skate park and Lovlay and the frigale at Rochefort.

Location

The neighbourhood

A sleepy, rural part of France. Saint-Jean-d'Angély is nearby, with a ruined abbey, lovely architecture and a good Saturday market – make sure you join the locals drinking wine in the morning in the cafés. The Jardin de Pomone is a ten-minute drive for splendid gardens and specimen fruit trees. Tackle water sports on the Port-D'Envaux lake, half an hour, or have a day out in La Rochelle.

Local points of interest from Sandra Lambert

  • The local village of Loulay (4 mins by car) offers a choice of two bread shops, a small Friday market and a stall with fresh oysters every Sunday morning in the market square.
  • Within an easy 35-minute drive to the coast, fabulous days can be spent on the beach on the Île d'Oléron, Royan, and the famous Île de Ré. Or just spend the day by the pool, or playing table tennis, croquet, badminton, boules or rounders at home!
  • The medieval market town of St Jean D'Angely is an easy 9-minute drive away. It offers a wide selection of bars and restaurants and twice weekly a market with local produce, fish and seafood.
  • The local area offers quiet roads and wonderful scenery for walking or cycling. Play boules in La Jarrie-Audouin, and swim or visit the tennis courts in Loulay or St Jean D'Angely.
  • Visit the producers of the local apéritif Pineau de Charentes for a tasting and tour.
  • Visit Cognac and take a tour of the famous estates, visit Saintes, Surgères and the surrounding areas, for history, brocantes and long lunches!
