The Experience

An informal, very open-hearted place to stay, where you can have homemade dinners with wine, a sharing platter, or just use the outdoor kitchen and barbecue if you want. Breakfasts (served in the dining room) include local organic eggs, homemade jams and granola and freshly baked cakes – a different one each day. Have a quiet read in the sun afterwards on the day bed – you don’t have to stand on ceremony here.

Two upstairs bedrooms feel contemporary with a sweet vintage twist; these can be rented out as communicating suites with a shared bathroom. The downstairs bedroom has its own entrance and private shower. Everything is clean, comfortable and delightfully full of character.

Wander to the village for a well-priced restaurant, or head to Saint-Jean-d’Angély for more choice. Walks and cycles will be through lovely countryside, and Saint-Jean-d’Angély has a market three times a week.

Reviews

Step off the quiet lane and into the sunny courtyard at Flora's house to a warm welcome and pretty rooms that are jolly and whimsical with floral quilts and sweet vintage touches. Grab a bike, head out with a picnic and enjoy the big skies, or laze by the river with a fresh new book. St Jean is wonderful with its architecture, markets and café culture and the beach is just a train ride away.

Location

The neighbourhood

In the village there's a restaurant on the edge of the river, serving French dishes under the shade of the trees, plus drinks and ice creams – it's convivial. In Saint-Jean-d'Angély, 8km, there are lots of restaurants, some bistros round the market place, or Le Scorlion at the foot of the abbey. There's also a thrice-weekly market. The nearest beach is Fouras, a 45-minute drive.

Local points of interest from Flora Alland

  • A beautiful historic town just 8 minutes away, Saint-Jean-d'Angély is a hidden gem with its UNESCO-listed Royal Abbey, lively Saturday market, cafés, independent shops and relaxed atmosphere.
  • Walk the Via Turonensis to Santiago de Compostela or cycle the Rives de Boutonne route, both passing right by the house. A perfect base for exploring the peaceful Charente-Maritime countryside.
  • Browse traditional markets, visit local vineyards and discover organic farms, artisan producers and regional specialities. We're always happy to share our favourite local addresses
  • Atlantic coast: La Rochelle, Fouras, Île de Ré and the beautiful Île d'Aix are all within an hour, making perfect day trips for beaches, seafood, coastal walks and picturesque harbours.
  • Explore the region's rich heritage, from the UNESCO-listed Royal Abbey of Saint-Jean-d'Angély to the Roman monuments of Saintes, the Château de Dampierre-sur-Boutonne and the famous Cognac houses.
  • La Pause d'Antezant, our favourite local guinguette, is just 5 minutes away by bike. Enjoy a drink or dinner beside the river while watching the sunset - a hidden gem loved by locals.

Introducing

Flora Alland

Kind Flora bought the house after selling her busy restaurant in La Rochelle. She wanted to stay in a caring-for-people role but at a slower pace. She concentrates on serving organic produce and showcasing local organic producers. She and her husband also run a printing business reproducing licensed vintage prints.
